Date: Los Angeles, 1978 (w. David Bowie and Bette Midler). Probably after a David Bowie show at the Inglewood Forum, April, 1978. Credits: photography by Andy Kent. "It was at Ma Maison restaurant, in L.A.," says Bette Midler of this late-night hang after a David Bowie show in 1978. "That was a spectacular time in my life. I was just coming up, having tremendous success, meeting people I'd never imagined I'd meet. Tom Waits I actually knew very well, because I was a fan and a follower of his in the old days, and I was one of the first people to record his music. I knew David a little bit."

From How Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie Got Together
Days before recording began, Johansson found herself sitting next to David Bowie at a party. “He said, ‘Hey, I hear you’re working with Dave Sitek,’” Johansson says. “I said, ‘Yeah, I’m super excited.’ In my mind I was thinking ‘If you get a chance come down to Louisiana, we’ll be down there for five weeks.’” Bowie never made it down, but while Scarlett was filming a movie in Spain Sitek called her to say Bowie had just dropped by during mixing and cut vocals for “Falling Down” and “Fannin’ Street.” “It was the best phone call I ever got,” Johansson says.
No live shows are planned to support the record, but Johansson hopes that will change. “It would be sad to not get everybody together, whether it’s at a festival or somewhere fun,” she says. “I think to be in a environment that’s user friendly and get everybody together and do some of the songs live would be great. There are no plans now, but it would be a shame not to.”
What does Tom Waits himself think of the record? “I’ve heard through friends that he’s very pleased with it and excited about it,” Jonansson says. “I didn’t want to go into it without his blessing. I sent him some of the early, early recordings that we did and he was like ‘Go ahead, go forth with it.’”

As reported on BNet today, 'Falling Down' is the lead single and is released on May 5 (UK). You can listen to it here. Bowie kicks in around 1:30 but unfortunately his vocals are pretty faint in the mix.
The video premiers tomorrow on Yahoo Launch.

it's, well, the word i'm looking for is pretty awful - scarlett doesn't even live up to nico/marianne faithful level of vocal abilities.

it's not awful necessarily, but it's just not very interesting. once bowie comes in, he definitely takes over in a way that i'm only concentrating on his voice, and no longer paying attention to hers (even his "oohs and ahhs" earlier in the song). there's too much going on with none of the hierarchy of sound in waits' songs that makes them so good.
however, it does make me somewhat interested to hear what the others sound like with just her voice - for her sake (and waits'?) they keep one's attention a bit better!
there's bourbon on the breath of the singer you love so much he takes all his words from the books that you don't read anyway

It's not too late for Bowie to re-invent his image once again.

Bowie already stole Steve Martin's "I'd like to thank each and everyone for coming tonight. Thank You, Thank You, thank You" stage banter, why not take the banjo bit as well?
