Endangered spider named after David Bowie [re: ]

From The Guardian:

A German specialist has found a new Malaysian species of arachnid and linked it to the rock star as part of efforts to raise awareness

David Bowie has received one of the most unusual tributes of his career. A newly discovered Malaysian spider has been named after the rock star.

The giant yellow – and very hairy – spider has been named Heteropoda davidbowie and is the most recent discovery of German spider specialist Peter Jäger, who has found 200 new species in the past 10 years.

Most of these arachnids are endangered, and by naming spiders after celebrities Jäger hopes to attract public attention to the dangers facing each species. "It is working against time," he says. "Along with the species, we are also quickly losing genetic resources that have evolved over more than 300 million years."

Bowie – whose album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was a major hit in 1972 – shares the honour of having a spider named after him with Jakob von Uexkull, founder of the Right Livelihood Award, which honours those working on solutions to global problems, and Nina Hagen, a German punk singer.

The planet is glowing.

Surely they should've named a Bipoda after him.

The Rats new [re: ziggfried]

The day after the David Bowie species of spider has been named/founded, we now have rats the size of cats according to Yahoo news.

Surely a sign of the end times...

RAT THE SIZE OF A CAT DISCOVERED

Researchers say they have discovered a new species of rat, measuring 82cm long, in the jungle of Papua New Guinea.

An expedition team from the BBC found the creature while filming a programme called 'Lost Land of the Volcano'.

The animal is thought to be one of the largest species of rat anywhere in the world, and only lives in the Mount Bosavi crater.

It was one of 40 previously unidentified species found by the scientists when they climbed into the crater and explored the habitat. The area hasn't evolved since the last eruption, 200,00 years ago.

The BBC team managed to trap a live specimen of the huge rat, after first capturing it on film.

Cameraman Gordon Buchanan said, "I had a cat and it was about the same size as this rat."

The animal is described as having a silver-brown coat of thick long fur, which may help it survive the wet and cold conditions.

Its scientific name has yet to be agreed.

The BBC team also found a camouflaged gecko, a fanged frog, a fish that makes a grunting sound and an extremely hairy caterpillar.

The planet is glowing.

Ye Gods. How long till they discover Pink Monkey Birds?

The frog with fangs thing is kinda disturbing. Did Count von Count bite Kermit and sire him into vampirism??

Imagine how cool it would be to have one of those little critters as your pet spider!

Apparently, it is large but harmless. It would also make very good sense to keep more than one and breed from them (seeing they're endangered).

I reckon the spider pic would make a great album cover.

Now all we have to do is get Bowie into the recording studio.
