Uncut September 2009

The September 2009 issue of Uncut does not have much Bowie-related content -- in fact he is mentioned three times; once in connection with Ian Hunter's new album, then a review of the Storytellers DVD, and then once more. Under the headline The Beatles: It's their world - we just live in it, Uncut makes an appallinglly bad job of listing 69 ways in which The Beatles influenced the world of popular culture. The worst entry may very well be the one on how they influenced Bowie, which says:
EVERYWHERE THERE'S LOTS OF ZIGGIES, LIVING ZIGGY LIVES A search of YouTube unearths an eyebrow-raising "Penny lane", recorded in 1967 by a then-unknown David Bowie for a Pickwick-style budget album. Note the hilariously out-of-time trumpet and Bowie's northern accent on "shaves another customer" (2.01).
When did you last see such bad research? And in addition, the pointlessness of it all... surely they could have dug up a few relevant ways in which the Beatles were important to Bowie... not the least his friend- (or mentor-) ship with Lennon.
It's SAILER, idiot!

I guess if they researched every article top to toe they would be there all day? Easy mistake to make though :) Uncute are normally pretty good with that stuff though.

Typing in the right search words on Youtube to see whether there is a connection to be found between Beatles and Bowie, instead of doing proper research and relying on solid knowledge?

C'mon we know that today's journalist only vaguely know how to use a browser, and typing in random words in Bing (the don't use google because they think it's too mainstreamy) is what they call an investigation.
Anyway, apart from that there is no other Beatles influence in Bowie's life but the famous "Penny Lane" cover - is it really him? Any background info available but this youtube stuff? It only sometimes sounds like Bowie, not enough to convince me though.

Precisely carsten, that's my point, besides there being other obvious Bowie-Beatles connections, the authenticity of that clip is debated.

Thanks for the link, Emil. That is the kind of discussion I was looking for.
