Bowie and Iggy: AS LEGO [re: ]

Iggy Pop and David Bowie are together again, but this time as mini-figures in the upcoming video game LEGO Rock Band.

To be released later this year, the game allows players to sing, strum or drum along to Bowie's 1983 song 'Let's Dance' using the same instrument-based controllers as other Rock Band games. The animations of Bowie and his band are apparently loosely based on the original music video.

More musicians involved in the game will be announced later. The game will be available on Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Microsoft Xbox 360.

Questions to Iggy new [re: Adam]

This seems like a strange combination, Iggy Pop and LEGO Rock Band. How did it come about?

Iggy Pop:
They asked. There's not much I won't do if you asked nicely.

Have you been part of a video game before? Do you play any video games yourself?

Iggy Pop:
No, but I've always wanted to be a toy and enjoy the freedom that comes with that. So it's a dream come true.

So how would you describe what you look like as a LEGO rocker?

Iggy Pop:
Like a terror. Kind of like the Energizer Bunny pissed off.

What are your thoughts about the current music video game trend? Many say its a lazy way to try to produce music. Others say it engages listeners in music and may light a spark in some to create music on their own. Do you come down on one side of that argument?

Iggy Pop:
When I was a kid, the first records that spoke to me were novelty songs, like Charlie Brown by the Coasters or The Witch Doctor and Flying Saucer records in the 50s. Later, as my tastes developed, of course, I changed, but these silly songs got me started. So I say I come down on the 'let the kids have some fun and get into it' side of the argument.

What songs of yours will be in the game? (How did you choose them?)

Iggy Pop:
The Passenger, and I didn't choose it they did and it's a good choice.

Good Lord, that stuff on the clip is awful.

Future generations will laugh their heads off at what we came up with.

Who's first to complain about the eye color thing? new [re: EJ]

Funny you should mention, I just last night took my first crack at Guitar Hero 5 - I'll admit to being a bit let down by "Sultans of Swing," probably because I'd been anticipating it since the first game, but "You Give Love a Bad Name" was suitably awesome.

I'm not sure what the point of the LEGO version is; I'm never paying attention to the avatars in the regular game anyway, but a gimmick is a gimmick I reckon.

And that Iggy LEGO guy is pretty sweet.

Seems like marketing gone mad.

Having said that, I'd buy these if they were actual LEGO figurines.

Pity they didn't Lego-ize a better era Bowie. Ziggy or the Thin White Duke would be more cute.

We will, we will, block you! new [re: ziggfried]

Queen has been added to the LEGO Rock Band.
Now Queen and Bowie can duet Under Pressure.

Iggy looks rather nice as a LEGO.

But the Rock Band thing... give me a break. it's horrible. I'm so glad I only have Nintendo 64 and can't find games on it anymore... these new games are taking away from good solid music.

In reply to:

The music can't be all that solid, then. Or the listener isn't. I'm going with the latter.
