"Uncle Floyd" as the origin of "Slip Away" is excellent stuff.

Thanks for posting that. It's not that hard to imagine the Ziggy version of "Hole in the Ground" while listening to this one.

Re: (THE FULL) TOY IS LEAKED new [re: The Fisting of Life]

After listening to the album a few times I'm forced to say that I'm not very impressed. Perhaps this is (at least in part) due to the high expectations caused by waiting for the album for a decade, but I must say I perfectly understand why Virgin did not want to publish Toy back in the day. The vast majority of the re-recordings are, in my opinion, inferior to the originals while the new songs (and recordings of old unreleased songs) also sound like they've been haphazardly put together. If I remeber The Complete David Bowie correctly, the album was recorded in just two weeks. Of course, it is possible to do a good album in such a short timespan (Buddha of Suburbia was also done in just two weeks), but here it does make me doubt Bowie's commitment to making a good album.

Back in 2004 Ulfdub suggested Toy was recorded only as a tactic of ridding Bowie of his Virgin contract: deliver a quickly put together album consisting mostly of tracks Virgin do not hold the rights to, thereby fullfilling the terms of his recording contract without giving Virgin the rights to actual new material. At the time the young Sysiyo, believing that Bowie can do no wrong and record companies are evil, didn't put much weight to this theory but looking at things now from an older and admittedly somewhat more cynical point of view. I dare say he was right. Toy was never meant to be actually released as an album. If it had been, Bowie would have at least made sure the material is better quality.

So...the album was made as a ploy and never actually meant to be released? I guess then Toy is the David Bowie equivalent of the 1994 Fantastic Four movie.

I thought that Bowie was greatly disappointed in not having Toy released so thatīs news to me for this to be but a ploy

My verdict [re: The Fisting of Life]

Hmmmm. Of the stuff that hasn't been released, only Hole In The Ground and The London Boys are really any good at all. Cool to hear the alternate mixes of the stuff that did wind up getting stuck on b-sides and bonus discs, though. I just wish it was in the context of a better, more coherent album.

Re: My verdict new [re: schizophrenic]

I agree, Schizo. It does sound like it was thrown together rather quickly. The man has had what, a decade to tweak it? If it's gonna be leaked, at least make it a little better.

Then again, we all really can't complain; at least it wasn't Rick Rolled like some full album leaks have the tendency to be.

Jareth's speech: Love Me, Fear Me, Do as I say, and I will be your slave. Heathen track: Show me who you are And I would be your slave
Coincidence? I think not.

Re: (THE FULL) TOY IS LEAKED new [re: The Fisting of Life]

I like the rough and ready dryness of this.

It's not his best album true or even his most challenging but it's a nice album and I can imagine will go down well at those summer BBQs.
