Nirvana new

“It isn’t all Pollack, Springsteen, Warhol and Nirvana. As with most craft to which we turn out hand we are extraordinarily inventive, ’though quirky, raising the stakes, but alas incapable of following through in pure hard sell.”

David Bowie, The Buddha Of Suburbia (liner notes), 15 September 1993

“I was simply blown away when I found out that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and I always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering ‘Man Who Sold The World.’ It was a very good straightforward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking would have been real cool.”

David Bowie, Spin, April 1995

(Speaking about Tin Machine)

I don't think there's anything rock n roll about what we do at all. Rock n roll to me is Gene Vincent or Little Richard. And we're not as retro as someone like Nirvana, with the kind of Stooges thing.

I've been pushing Sonic Youth since '88.

I think they're terribly important whereas I think Nirvana did a fine job with that single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', but I wouldn't expect to hear from them in another couple of years.

Re: Nirvana new [re: Adam]

Some of my recent albums have been picked up by the Nineties generation, but then they don't know the early stuff......I know that because, in America especially, when I do 'The Man Who Sold The World' the amount of kids that come up afterwards and say, 'It's cool you're doing a Nirvana song.' And I think, 'Fuck you, you little tosser!'"

Re: Nirvana new [re: Adam]

The music business is so incestuous that people like David Bowie are so entrenched in the lifestyle and have cultivated relationships with people within the music industry for years and they’re his friends and he doesn’t want to offend them so he just keeps going. Keeps milking it for all it’s worth because it’s his life and it’s all he knows. I suppose if the music was a bit more raw, and if it was good, at least, it would be better. But no one’s buying that Tin Machine shit.

Everyone's afraid of burning bridges. I mean I've read Marc Bolan interviews where he's just tearing apart David Bowie and people like that- and he's just completely pompous about it And I thought, That's rock n' roll! That's really great, that's what it should be.

Re: Nirvana new [re: Adam]

I didn't meet him, but I was flattered that he liked my stuff. I hadn't been aware that there had been much of an influence of my particular music on the newer generation of bands. When it became apparent, like Trent Reznor talking about the Low album and the Smashing Pumpkins saying something or other, it started to dawn on me that the cycle had come around.

I was flattered that he liked my work; I don't think I can add anything to the wealth of material that's been written about all that. I like Courtney Love very much, I thought she was a very nice girl.

Re: Nirvana new [re: Adam]

I'm going to break the rules of this forum for a second(fell free to delete my post)

-Kurt's Journals and the new copy of Uncut Legends contains a list of 50 favourite records, including a couple Bowie related LPs. (The same uncut mag has a picture of KC parodying the S&V boxset cover)

-There is a website containing all stage banter of known Nirvana concert tapes. There may be a Bowie/cobain quote there, but I'm having difficulty locating the site I read last week.

-Heavier than Heaven(KC biog) has a passage on the affect DB's 79 appearance on SNL had on him.

I am busy at the moment and don't have immediate acces to my material. But I know others here may do. I also hate posting print things because I have to type it out.

-Should we include Grohl and Courtney quotes in this thread?
