"Bowie is one of the few originals. He has a great sense of theatre and is one of the people i respect in the business. Bowie, Elton and I are very competitive. I see what they do and I say 'I can do better than that' and when I do, I want them to say 'I can do better than that', and when they do I go one step further. That keeps everything healthy and interesting. They represent showbiz and I respect them for that." (1974)

" Bowie and I got married, then we split up around 1973...no really, we were never enemies. The press made all that up. They did it with Bowie and Bolan but those guys were good friends. Same with Lennon and McCartney." (1982)

Cooper (whom everybody calls "Coop") agrees once the hits dry up, you have to be able to perform live if you want career longevity. "That's so true. We were a band for six years before we stepped into a studio. I think the guys who came from that early '70s era - from Elton John to Rod Stewart to Bowie - they had a strong work ethic and they're still touring."

"It was hard to be a teenager in 1974. You had to make major decisions, such as whether you should cut your hair like David Bowie or like Alice Cooper!"
