"David Bowie was really the only guy I had in mind to play Tesla because his function in the story is a small but very important role...He has to present an extraordinarily charismatic and noticeable presence in the film. I wanted somebody who wasn't a movie star; somebody's who's charismatic and had this sort of star quality in a slightly different way, which I think is perfect for that. I flew out to New York to meet him. I said, 'I have to get you to do this because I don't have anyone else in mind who can do it the way I can see it in the film.' Luckily, he seemed to respond to that… He's pretty clear on what he wants to do and doesn't want to do."

“I’ve been a huge fan of [Bowie] ever since I was a kid and casting Tesla who has this small but pivotal role, you need somebody who immediately communicates this sort of otherworldly qualities and extraordinary charisma. I felt that any movie star, for example, doing that would be distracting in the wrong way whereas Bowie’s charisma comes from a different place, a little left of center really. It was quite fascinating so to get him was very exciting. He was terrific to work with.”

“I was looking for a Tesla who would have an extraordinary and immediate charisma. It's a small part in the film but it's so important, for the audience when they see him, to immediately invest in the possibilities of what this guy could do for Angier (Hugh Jackman). I felt that any movie star would provide that charisma in the wrong way and be distracting somehow. Bowie's charisma, his otherworldly sort of qualities, he comes from a different place. It was a bit of an odd choice in some ways but to me it was essential to get him. Luckily, I managed to convince him by telling him that, basically.”

...and again...(poor guy!) new [re: ziggfried]

“[The supporting cast] were an incredible bunch. I mean, [David] Bowie, particularly, was a very essential figure in that casting because Tesla's a small part, but a very important part in the film. The audience has to see him on screen and immediately invest a tremendous amount of belief in his abilities as some kind of, well, magician, wizard. I felt that to get a movie star to do that would be very distracting. Bowie's presence and charisma comes from a different place. It's harder to define, but very palpable. I'm very lucky to have convinced him to do it.”
