MWSTW drag cover.

something thats niggled at me for years.i used to have TMWSTW drag cover lp which i sold to a dealer for 5 who assured me it was a boot as the original was a gatefold cover.the cover was slightly textured with a waxy feel and the spine wasnt squared off properly but just wrapped around.the inner sleeve was half circular clear polythene. As i paid 30 for it a record fair and it was mint im inclined to think it was a bootleg but id love to know for sure.

If the cover had a waxy feel to it, it was almost certainly a Japanese pirate copy. The original US/UK's don't feel waxy. Original copies had a black label, pirates from Japan have a gray label. The pirate copies made in Italy have a white record label.

Well, the originals did have a black label. The JAP pirates had a dark gray label, but it had a silver band around the edge, whereas the original labels had none.

Another way to tell the JAP copies from the originals is if Bowie's boot touches the edge of the cover. On the original there is about a 1/4" space between the tip of his boot and the edge of the cover. On pirate copies, the tip of the boot touches the edge of the cover (like on the Rykos).

The originals had a textured cover, kind of like wallpaper, but I don't recall them feeling waxy.
BTW, the original drag covers did not have a gatefold cover.

yes, like vinyl wallpaper.not gloss, more satin finish.the thing that aroused my suspicion most was the spine.and would a genuine inner sleeve not been a standard paper one.I was hoping for an emphatic cry of "fake" but Im beginning to wonder now! thanks by the way.

Re: MWSTW drag cover. new [re: lestwh]

I'm not sure about the spine. I saw a Japanese copy once, and all I remember about the spine was that the writing was going the wrong way. That kind of made it stand out when it was stored on the shelf. The UK copy my friend bought had a lot of spine wear, but it looked like it had been wrapped properly once, I really didn't pay that much attention to the spine details though.

As far as the clear poly inner sleeve (I always hated those things), they definitely were not using those in 1970 when MWSTW was first released. But the JAP counterfeit was made sometime in the late 70's. I don't believe they were using them then, either. Those started being used sometime in the 80's, if I remember correctly. Generic inner sleeves went from the square white ones to the rounded off white ones, and then those poly things. But then again, I'm not really up on when they started using those sleeves in Japan. There's always the possibility that the original inner sleeve was lost or damaged, and someone along the line replaced it with a clear one. I've seen LPs from the 50's and 60's in used record stores with those clear sleeves.

The fact that the guy told you it wasn't an original because it didn't have a gatefold cover doesn't sound to good. If it really was a counterfeit, there are obvious differences he could have pointed out.

If you happened to tape Bowie's appearance on Regis & Kelli a few weeks ago, Regis had some of Bowie's old LPs he was showing to the audience, and one of them was an original drag cover. It had a bit of ring wear, but was still a nice copy.
