Surrender your collections new

I think we can all agree that the greatness of David Bowie is his music, a fairly pure sensory experience.....minus the cost of a compact disc.

But one thing strikes me as odd about this forum and that is the supposed 'need' to collect beyond the completed acquisition of his music.

For instance, what does one actually gain from 'owning' a CD copy of ChangesTwoBowie other than satisfying a need to 'have' or to 'own'?

Surely the 'collector' as opposed to the 'completist' operates under the jurisdiction of needless consumerism.....or materialism....or something very odd.

But all is not lost.

As a method of redeeming your capitalist ways, I offer you the chance to donate to me, the non-collector.

I thought it was the other way around, that a "collector" only gathers up items of interest, whereas a "completist" has to have it all.

Is Thursday OK to drop mine off?

I gain great pleasure from owning these items, Im so proud of them I have them on display in my study/computer room, It's virtually a shrine to Bowie now ( no kidding ) It's just lovely to be surrounded by all these goodies.

Re: Surrender your collections new [re: Adam]

I think the completed acquisition of his music is open to individual interpretation. Some people might have collections on vinyl while others on CD's or in some strange cases cassette tapes or MP3's. It might be enough for one person to just have the 13 or so studio albums but another might want rare trax that go along with collecting. For instance my vinyl collection spans 1969 thru 2004 and represents every year of Bowie activity through that time. A while back I decided to do the same on CD since it was the more acceptable modern format. I only duplicated the studio albums and in some cases picked up valuable bonus tracks along the way. I also had a representative recording for each tour. There is so much out there to get. It's a good idea to decide what it is you truly want and what's important to you. My collection cost me a fair amount of money but I don't think of it in terms of consumerism or materialism. Bowie's music and life mean much more to me than just mere possessions.

I guess that's why there are fan level ratings in the user entries.

And no you can't have my collection because clearly you wouldn't appreciate it.

The cover art? The real answer could be nothing except a more depleted bank account.

There are twenty-six studio albums.

Ahh yes I picked that up too. Perhaps the suggestion is there are only 13 GOOD ones?

Congratulations Humbert!..... Johnny, tell him what he's won

Of course there are more than 13, but I was referring to an imaginary average fan. When I think of average fans I usually envision them buying from the main body of Bowie's work 69-80. Maybe picking up an album from 90's or present time.

I mean if you're gonna buy ALL the studio albums then you might as well start buying some rarities, cause in my opinion you've started collecting.
