Odd Bowie items on ebay???
|
|
|
Just thought I'd start this thread about the oddities that lurk on ebay
This as it's titled very rare supposed 1967 "Laughing Gnome" single c/w "The Gosple According to Tony Day" must be a fake in some way? take a look at the cover picture to the single, Is this the image of Bowie circa 1967? NO! It's from 1973 I would guess. item and just witness the price

Please feel free to expose any Bowie oddities you may find on ebay, ebay has many good sellers and Im not saying their all bad by any means, but this is an insult to any Bowie fans intelligence, what say you?

Thanks for the backup Alan, Im not out to expose sellers but to make sure what they are selling is correctly advertized.
I mean as if Mr Bowie looked like this in 1967

There has been deram sleeves with Bowie with curly hair, ziggy hair, as the gouster, thin white duke, lodger era and 1990 sound and vision. Decca have been making Bowie's 1960s work look contemporary for the last 30 years.

Just reading that has given me a ruddy good giggle, but it is just so true, I don't mind the varying covers to a point, It's just when they claim it's from a certain era\date and it is not.

That is the very rare French rerelease of the Laughing Gnome from 1973, which is indeed worth quite a lot of money. It is a bit odd that the seller mentions it as 1967, as that seller seems to know what he is doing. We all make mistakes I guess.

Well if that is genuine Ant it is a true rarity, it is not as stated the original cover of the album that became Let's Dance it was actually an album due to appear in 1986 I think, which would include remixes of tracks from Let's Dance and Tonight, and would be sequenced together. It never appeared and some Cover slicks are all that there is to remember another of Bowie's lost albums by. Sad that the seller couldn't get his facts correct though.

So Club Bowie almost 20 years ahead of its time. It makes you wonder, though, how many remix albums were actually sanctioned by the artists and how many were successfully vetoed.

£163.88 that has to be rediculous
Actually although Im not a fan of Let's Dance the album artwork was much better than this rather silly Bowie with umbrella cover, It's just way too average and quite naff for a Bowie album cover, the original Let's Dance was very more Bowiesque IMO.
Still someone has money to burn and Im NOT jealous

They weren't. whether the mixes of Blue Jean, Shake it, dancing with the big boys, or loving the alien were the commercially released on the 12" singles of the time is uncertain, but there was never remixes done of Let's Dance, China girl or Modern Love. This album was shelved and the material never released. Apparently both sides of the album (not sure whether Blue jean is on the end of side one or begining of side two) were going to be sequenced continuously. This was a common practice of the time, with remix albums by Euryhtmics, Human League, Pet shop boys etc. Considering I liked a lot of the remixes on the 12"s, I would have enjoyed this album had it been released.

Yeah, but we don't know if the mixes on the bootleg would have been the same as on the official LP. If I'm reading the Illisitrated Discographjy correctly, the mixes for Dance were done by Rusty Gardner and Paul Sabu, which would make them different from the extended dance mixes. For those interested, Blue Jean was mixed by John 'Jellybean' Benitez, Dancing With The Big Boys by Arthur Baker, Loving The Alien, Don't Look Down and Underground by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero. Those are the only ones associated with this collection that I know about, and there doesn't seem to be a web source that would tell the makers of different mixes.
Additionally, it's highly unlikely any official release would have included Disconet mixes, as they are unofficial DJ mixes.

I think the fact that it has all the below mentioned done to it, that makes it this valuable apparently?
You are bidding for a unique presentation signed album of Young Americans 1975..."Our Price" records website will confirm the value..the cover is personally signed by the man himself with a certificate of authenticity..the certificate confirms that the framed item has been security sealed...thisthis will sell for at least £2000 at a retail outlet....a must for all Bowie devotees....I have since been informed that the late Luther Vandross performed backing vocals on the single of the same name....

It's one hell of a lot of money

What I mean is, what is so special? It has Bowie's signature on it, wow. If it was a specially written personal message to me, then it would mean something, but a signature is pretty lame really. And dressing it up by putting it in a fancy frame doesn't make it any better. COA's are nothing to shout about either.

Well thats your view, but I would place great importance on it being signed, I've bought so called autographed photos off ebay with COA, but Im not that sure they are real, but in the shops that actually specialize in these genuine signed products by Bowie they sell for vast amounts of money, I would personally love a real autograph of Bowies, but thats just my opinon only, I guess we all view things differently.

BTW...
Sound+Vision was released just before the re-issue schedule got under way (1989). It is a beautifully packaged and comprises three full-length CDs or LPs, the cd edition contains a fourth CD with three live tracks, and a LDCD video edit of Ashes To Ashes. Although officially a North American release, it was heavily imported for a while into the UK. It was also available in a very limited wooden box special edition containing a certificate of authenticity signed by Bowie himself. It was re-issued in November 1994 with a CD-ROM version of the Ashes To Ashes video, and in October 1995 it was re-packaged as Sound + Vision Revisited as a regualr sized set of three CDs.
Anybody ever seen this for sale on eBay or anywhere esle? and has anyone got a picture of this wooden boxset please.

I saw it once in a record store in Soho for around 250 UK pounds. Not worth it for that much. And I did see the CD box set for about $60A in 2001. Went back a day later to get it and it had been snapped up.

Bearing in mind how big Bowie was then, and how popular jukeboxes were, nothing would surprise me!
... especially as it would raise awareness of the two b-sides while only using up one space in the machine, especially if the landlord already had, say The Jean Genie and Starman in there.
And, of course they are both covers that would make them more palatable on a jukebox rather than, say, self penned obscurities.
Still, a nice item.

It is neither, it is the cd single of BTWN and a baktabak interview disk that have been bundled together. Someone is making it out to be something it is not though.

The BTWN / Interview IS NOT a pirate... more just a company exploiting a legal loophole by sticking together two releases they bought up the overstock of.
There is quite a variety of different singles I've seen packaged with the interview like this, although none quite inkeeping thematically with the interview.

I don't really see the attraction of the cassettes to be honest. CD's for their sound and ease, vinyl for the big pictures and because they're so tactile, but cassettes, with their hissy sound and miniscule artwork, not my thing, I have NLMD and the two tin machine cassettes, and they're free to a good home to be honest.

In reply to:
Is this really a boot? I have this record and I always thought it was an official release, licensed to the official Russian Melodia label.
I wondered that which is why I poised the question, but after looking at the db discography section it says this...
Pirate albums are LPs or CDs that at first sight appear to be regular releases, but in fact are bootlegs pretending to be official albums; also included are a few bootlegs that were available through official channels plus several semi-legal albums (from countries that have no copyright laws). In this section all LPs and the CDs Greatest Hits First Presentation to David Bowie are covered.
Starman (Melodia C 6026469001), 1989 (Russia) Space Oddity/God Knows I'm Good/All The Madmen/Black Country Rock/Five Years/Soul Love/Moonage Daydream/Starman/Lady Stardust.
It even has a catalogue number, be it boot/pirate or whatever? I'm very envious you have this fab recording

I don't get how they wanted so much for it. It was selling for about 20 UK pounds in the early to late 90's through Marhsall Jarman.
I only paid about 10 UK pounds for my copy. The only interesting stuff on Ebay that deserve high prices are the 7" singles. The bootleg vinyl is all available is mass these days so the old 70's and 80's vinyl boots are not that rare to me anymore.

Although the stereo version of this album would be more widespread, an original stereo 1967 edition would be rarer than the mono one as it was not until a couple of years later that stereo really became the prefered format.

I haven't got the foggiest Russell, It does seem odd releasing it in mono then in stereo in the same year I take it?
And why mono it was the mid 1960s and stereo had been around since 1956 on a commercial basis.

Anthony, although Stereo had been around since 1956 it really only became commonplace as the main medium in the very late sixties. For example the White album was the first Beatles album that was primarily mixed in stereo first. All the albums up to then had been mixed meticulously in mono and then almost as an afterthought mixed in stereo. Abbey road was the first Beatles album only released in Stereo and some Beatles fans still prefer the mono albums over the stereo.
So as you can see releasing both mono and stereo albumes at the same time was not odd at all and was in fact the industry standard. The stereo albums would usually, especially at the start of the decade be produced to much smaller numbers than the mono. The original stereo version of Please please me for instance is worth thousands.

<<Beatles Mono/Stereo>>
About 6 of their mid catalogue, the fab 4 and george martin only oversaw the Mono mixes. The Stereo mixes were done by underlings who were probably not at the sessions.
There is a reason why the original Mono vinyl is worth hundreds of $ each, even though they sold millions of them.
I've had the Mono Pepper, and now refuse to listen to any version.
IIRC,the mono Beatles have never been reissued outside the sixties. Recently, there has been vinyl reissues of mono albums by Dylan, hendrix, Pink Floyd and the velvets which have done very well.

In the early 80s I can remember seeing mono versions of the pre Pepper albums on occasions in the shops, and I am talking even high-street multiples like WH Smiths selling them, so they were still pressing them at that time. On cd the first four Beatles albums were released in Mono, but there was a huge argument about it at the time, with people saying that they should have released more of them in mono, up to at least Rubber Soul. The stereo separation on the Beatles albums up to and including Revolver is pretty horrible, with basically instruments in one speaker and vocals in the other. They did get better with Sgt Pepper, but I too got a dubbed from vinyl mono cd a few months ago, the first time I had heard the mono mix, and there are all these bits and pieces missing from the stereo. I remember in 1987 when the cd came out that either Ringo or George was really disappointed with the cd. It turned out that for the previous 20 years they had only ever heard the mono version of the album. For a lot of the Beat groups (The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers etc) EMI did some good rereleases which had the mono and stereo versions of their albums on one cd. It is a shame that Apple corps are reticent to do the same for the Beatles. We still have 18 year old cds on the shelves for them. I am suprised more hasn't been done with the Beatles catalogue, considering how much it is worth. Beatles fans are the most fanatical of beasts and EMI are losing out on a huge market by not giving the Beatles cds a revamp. Apart from Pepper, all the other original cds are pretty basic, basically the packaging from the original albums and that's it. All of the albums up to and including Pepper should have the mono/stereo format adopted (like they did with the first four Capitol albums in 2004). The white album is a trickier beast, but a bonus disc of tracks which are significally different in mono would be ok (eg Don't pass me by is at a different speed and Helter Skelter is shorter in mono). The albums after The white album, were, I think, only released in stereo.

<<18 year old cds>>
They fixed up the US albums, #1s and remixed the YS soundtrack. McCartney also oversaw the DVD audio on the Anthology release. In the late 90's they Pepper reissue ready to press, but it got removed at the last minute.
Another problem with the Beatles CDs is the failure to use the absolute mixdown master tapes. I've heard that 3rd and 4th generation tapes have been used in some instances.
I have heard about some unofficial DVDAs made from various sources all some/all of the Beatles albums. It's done by professional sound engineers doing it on their free time. If the sound quality is better than the CDs, i'm surprised the story hasn't been picked up by news outlets.
Are all Beatles albums officially available in stereo at one time or another?

Yeah, admittedly there has been some good quality reissues from Beatles at the BBC up to Let it Be dvd which is due this year. But the core of the catalogue, the 13 albums from Please Please me to Let it be are cruelly ignored by Apple/EMI. Any other company would have at least remastered them once by now and given them a vastly improved cd booklet. I look at the Beach Boys reissue campaign from the early 90s on how good things can be. (Incidently most of the BB's 60s work was reissued in mono because that is how Brian mixed them, giving him total control on the final mix people hear).
All the Beatles albums were available in Stereo on vinyl right up to the late 80s. I am not sure what the status is now on other formats but on cd the first four albums are mono with the rest in stereo on cd. There is a box set of the first four US albums which was released last year that has the mono and stereo versions of each album on the same disc.
Incidently regarding stereo v mono. There are some significally different takes between the two. Please please me and Help were totally different takes on the mono singles, If I fell on the stereo Hard days night has a different vocal take, and includes them getting the words wrong (this happens on the stereo please please me too). The stereo version of From me to you was only mixed for inclusion on the 1966 Oldie but goldies album and when they did the stereo mix, they found out that they didn't have the harmonica overdub anymore, so the stereo version has no harmonica on it.

I haven't heard them, no. I would be suprised if first generation tapes were not used for the cds, although when you consider it was 18 years ago, when people were putting all sorts of poor cd masters out (Led zeppelin being a good example here, the original cds were terrible apparently, until Jimmy Page personally remastered them in the mid 90s) Another bad example of cd mastering were the original Queen cds which suffered from poor track separation. It was ok to play the albums start to finish, but if picking individual tracks out, you were liable to hear the end of the previous track, or miss out the beginning of the track you wanted.

Those early Queen CDs did indeed have lazy track marking... and I'm not sure it has been 100% corrected on the newer ones (still over 10 years old)
That's one band who need a decent ~deluxe~ reissue programme.

Ardent told me this..
TO MEET BOWIE Label & nr: JOY RECORDS 1000 SS 10 A/B Cover: printed full colour cover Records: 1 LP Released: 1982 Venue: outtakes, BBC & official versions. Bonus: coloured vinyl
SONGS: RADIO PROMOTION FOR DAVID LIVE / "HEROES" / 1984 - DODO / YOU´RE HOLDING ME DOWN / A LADD IN VEIN / ROUND AND ROUND / WAITING FOR THE MAN / LOVE YOU TILL TUESDAY / BABY LOVES THAT WAY / LITTLE DRUMMER BOY / "HEROES".
COMMENTS: The discs came with or without printed labels, as well as with different ground colours on the cover. These colours are blue or green. "HEROES" is a silly home made mix. YOU'RE HOLDING ME DOWN has nothing to do with Bowie, except that it was (maybe) recorded by his former group, The King Bees! 1984- DODO / A LADD IN VEIN / LOVE YOU TILL TUESDAY are all outtakes. WAITING FOR THE MAN IS FROM BBC 1970. The rest of the songs are official versions. The other version of "HEROES" is from A Merry Olde Christmas TV Show 1977.

I've got this vinyl too. I don't think it's a boot, because MELODIA, this disc's label, has released some other stuff, not only Bowie's, and the sleeve has got a sticker with the price on it (apparently from 1989) - 25000z³...but I may be wrong.
Anyway, it doesn't seem like an "ultra rare" disc. It may be rare, 'cos it was supposedly spread only into the communist countries, and probably not so many copies were pressed - but there's no information to confirm this (maybe it's on the other side of the sleeve, but I don't know Russian)

I think Xavery was talking about the Russian album, not the 12" remix. Melodia is a well known Russian label, they released some strange Beatles albums in Russia too. They aren't bootlegs, and they aren't official, they are in a grey murky area inbetween.

Um, yes, I was. Anyway, I think you're right with the "grey murky area" - the sound quality on this disc (i'd give it at least an EX) is noticeably lower than on traditional RCA Victor vinyls.
When we're into RCA Victor - I've also got the first UK pressing of "ChangesOneBowie" (with the sax version of "John, I'm Only Dancing") and "Low" with a tracklisting on a sticker.

Yeah I know but I have a love of these 60s compilation albums and especially since this one is on the Pickwick label, I've bid a ridiculously low bid, If someone overbids me? It's theirs, but even so this is a product, something to actually own and precisely the point I was making about downloading that Bowie/AF EP, the same argument could be said, If we feed the iTunes greed, I fear all music will end up as downloads which if the case? music will die.

So I deduct from this...
Ziggy Stardust (Bowie): from the album with the same name, the Rykodisc version also including a demo. The studio version was released on single as B-side to 'The Jean Genie' (RCA 2302). In 1972, Bowie recorded no less than three live versions for BBC radio, two of which have appeared on Bowie At The Beeb. Live versions from 1972, 1973, 1978 and 2003 have appeared on Santa Monica '72, Ziggy Stardust - The Motion Picture, Stage and the A Reality Tour DVD respectively. The Santa Monica '72 version was released as a CD-single in France (Golden Years GYCDS 002) and the US (Griffin GCD-382-2; both promoted by a video clip using live footage shot at in Dunstable, Civic Hall, 21-06-72), whereas the Stage version appeared as a B-side of the 1978 'Breaking Glass' EP (RCA BOW 1). Besides on the tours mentioned earlier, 'Ziggy Stardust' was also performed live in 1990, 2000 and 2002.
It's a phony, thanks.

L@@K David Bowie - 1960's Demo's - Social Girl + Everything Is You

25 years ago I owned a Bowie Acetate of 2 unreleased and more importantly non-bootlegged Bowie compositions and demos. The tracks were Social Girl & Everything Is You (the latter was recorded by the Beatstalkers) these two tracks are Bowie and have never been released or bootlegged! All I have today is my original audio cassette backup copy I made of the disc before it was sold on. The tracks are not for sale, but my old cassette is available. The two tracks are not being sold or provided with any copyright. The Cassette is looking for a new home with a discerning Bowie collector. I will not be offering CD-Rs of this now or later. Think! even to this date these tracks are still unheard and represent not one but two critical and missing links in Bowies formative recording years!

All bootlegs are illegal.
Would you define this ligitimately bought download a bootleg?
This is not a bootleg in the true sense of the word is it? It's been downloaded from pay site iTunes and burnt to cd, the seller is offerring a download from a proper music source, which makes it a copy, not a bootleg.
Therefore it must be illegal.

Once someone resells it it is technically a bootleg or counterfeit item. It would be like to copying a cd you had bought and selling the copy on ebay.
They are selling something which they don't have the license to sell.

The law yes I suppose it is, but when friends exchange items to one another with no monies involved, I think this is perfectly ligitimate IMO, nobody is actually ripping anyone off, except the main site supplying the material, It sounds terribly hyporcritical of me I know, but you know what I mean.
Just did a search for Fashion Rocks and found nothing! perhaps eBay are clamping down?

Well it is ripping someone off, there is the copyright, publishing etc. Everytime someone gives someone a ripped cd, that is one cd that potentially will not be bought. Whether it is a virtual product or a real cd.

I've heard that argument many times, I agree it is ripping off the main supplier of the music to a point ( as my point to being hyporcritical ), but if one likes the finnished product that much they'll no doubt buy it, I've had many burnt cds come my way and I've bought the originals if I like it that much, I'm sure many people do this, I see it as one big commercial.

Senseless? My mother's family were Polish farmers. I take great offense!
Besides, PVC is the same product as vinyl and it's certainly not "foil" as claimed.
Moreover, if Poland was so poor to create records from regular materials, then why these colour picture discs? Madness. But some fool will believe

"On a promotional tour of the US in January 1971, I was very kindly offered a room to crash in by the record producer Tom Ayers. At that time, Tom was producing one of the all time rock heroes, Gene Vincent. One night, at the recording studio, Tom asked whether I would like to jam or sing something with Gene. At that point, I had already written 'Moonage Daydream', 'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Hang On To Yourself'. We settled on 'Hang On To Yourself' and made a ghastly version of it which is floating around on eBay, I expect"

What bootlegs has Bowie "debunked" on BNet, besides the rumoured Penny Lane recording?
Bowie also took his Ziggy stance(one leg back, looking like he's sprinting) from Gene Vincent. Not sure if Bowie talked about it in print, but he talked about it at the Kelowna April 2004 gig.
