In all honesty Brian, yes I do reckon they're worth keeping, well I'd keep them if I had them, I sold most of my Bowie vinyl to buy Bowie CD's, wished I'd have kept them now.
Too nice to sell, don't ya think?

I would never sell anything. Unless you have to. Selling something means that you are giving up its intrinsic value for the value of cash, which varies depending on what people think it is worth. This does not mean that you should never save money for investment purposes.

I can only see two advantages:
(a) For research purposes & keeping a copy of the original mix and track order.
(b) For your collection's sake. Although I don't care for collecting, even I would notice the two gaping holes in your RYKOs when you presumably own all the others.
But I reckon it does boil down to getting a good price. If I ever register an EBay account, I'll be sure to sell my copies of the Travelling Wilbury's long deleted CDs and my CD copy of Floyd's original Relics release.

As I recall, it was a joke by the Wibury's to look as if they had a long and fruitful career. They were a 'group' for about 2 years, though.

The 2 Wilbury's album are great, I am surprised that they havent re-released them. They surely will at some point I think. I have volume 1 & 3 on CD, Vinyl and Cassette. I have a sealed volume 1 cd in the long box and a un-sealed one to listen to.

I bought my Ryko Stage 2 cd set from eBay, just before the new EMI releases, I paid about £15.00, It used to sell for about £60.00 plus I could never afford that, alternately David Live ( on Ryko cds ) I bought new from 101cd.com for about £10.00 three years ago, for some odd reason? Stage was always priced much higher.

Hmmm... that odd. Stage was more scarce? By the time it came out the reissues were getting little press and casual sales?
Around london town it is not uncommon now to see the Live Rkyos for under £10.
As I've had my beloved repurchase of the cassette of David Live for 6 months now, I am able to pass them by.

So Stage was released after David Live on the Ryko disc label, I though they were all released simultaneously?

I know that the first three were released in the US a good few months before becoming available in the UK, I think after that the releases were more evenly matched.
Yes, Russell you are right about SM and ZSTMP, they were released at different times. My mistake.
It was only in 1999 that all the (studio) albums were released almost at once, I think they were released in two batches.

Ant, when people refer to Ryko's it is usually both the Rykodisc and the EMI versions they are referring to. If they are talking about the 1999 issues, they usally say the remasters.

It's interesting in timing and what is decided for re-release. I find it interesting how The Beatles albums were released once onto cd in the late 1980's and not again since, What you buy in the shops as a new copy of a Beatles album on cd will be from the 80's, unless its The re-release of the White album and Let it be, both of which were heavily tampered with. The same with the Wilburys and Buddha of Suburbia, they are obviously in demand so why arent they re-released?

I heard that there were small pieces which were taken out such as slight mutterings betweens the Beatles in some tracks, I can't remember what they were now.

From memory, the RYKO issues spanned two full years. According to the Guiness Book of Rock Stars, the first three (Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory) were released on April 4, 1990 and charted at UK #39, UK #66 and UK #64 respectively. Ziggy was released two months later in June and proved the most in demand reissue charting at UK #25. On July 28, Aladdin Sane (UK #43) and Pin Ups (UK #52) were reissued. On Oct 27, Diamond Dogs (UK #67) was reissued. In the next couple months, I purchased my first disc which was Young Americans and I recall a happy summer's day riding home on the bus with Low, "Heroes" and Lodger freshly purchased from Virgin megastore (which had a special display). Scary Monsters was a long wait (perhaps a full year) and Ziggy Motion Picture was some time as well. The latter two were released post Tin Machine II - they both have 1992 printed on them.
Has anyone noticed that the first three reissues (the pre-Ziggy albums) have a different font on the spine? All other RYKOS (including the Yoko Ono and Frank Zappa ones I've seen) use the typically distinctive RYKO italics. Seeing it was my first experience with those albums, I always considered them something of a trilogy.

Just looking arount the net and it says that there was no remastering of the White album done, which is what I thought, as I quite fancied getting the album back in 1998 but didn't because it was; A: Too expensive at nearly £30 B: Not remastered, and having the original cd issue, seemed superfluous. If you look on Amazon, a lot of the comments are related to the fact it isn't remastered.

Adam Ryko Days
When these albums first came out, I was still buying vinyl, so all the albums up to David Live (apart from, for some reason Diamond dogs) I have on vinyl, with TMWSTW and HD being the RYKO clear vinyl editions, the others being the inferior UK EMI black vinyl editions. I managed to buy a lot of them on cd quite cheap from 1993 onwards, I think the first two I bought, Pin ups and Diamond dogs cost me about £4 each.

A different story here. In the early 90s, Bowie Rykos were full price ($25) but you might find them discounted to $17.99 if you spent endless hours scouring record stores. The same deal with The Beatles back catalogue. In fact, Bowie and The Beatles were probably the most prized of all catalogues and unfortunately they were the two artists I was interested in collecting. On the very rare circumstance of finding them second hand, they'd never go below $18. Things have changed now though ...... you can get brand new EMIs here for $8 (about 3 quid) if you know where to look.

I LOVE talking about the Ryko reissues. The differing font on the spine is something I noticed too. I think it fits in (with hindsight) that they were the early ones and therefore had slight differences to the later ones (although you are right... other Ryko releases by different artists have the same font as the latter Bowie ones.
And the white STS cassette spine. What's all that about?
Summer 1990 was brilliant... I remember waiting for those reissues and being SO excited. Good days.
Also... remember the Ryko boxsets? The Berlin trilogy in a boxset called 'Technical Unit' or something, and the flawed but welcome ZS box.

yes they were great days. And there was no internet to spoil the surprise of what the bonus tracks were going to be. With the exception of Aladdin Sane it turned out quite a treat. Prior to that all I had was some ropey quality cassettes with rare Bowie songs.
