You are looking at the statement from the wrong end, the danish newspaper exercised its' free speech and published the cartoons, people paid with their lives.
It was irresponsible to publish, they might have had the right, but they didn't have to exercise it. They didn't exercise the right to publish cartoons lampooning christians around the same time.
