I assure you my thinking he was "never really gay" has nothing to do with any sort of homophobia or unwillingness to accept others' sexuality. In fact, I have been trying to convince plenty of my male friends that they are gay despite their total non-cooperation.

As for Bowie, well gee, he said that he was "gay and always has been" while married and expecting a child, so that tells you how much he cared for strict accuracy of terms at the time. (By your own definition, that would make him at most bisexual.)
