I am reliably informed that a pit bull will cease and desist an attack on a person or animal, if a finger (or thumb) is inserted into it's anus.

Of course it doesn't have to be your finger ... you could use someone else’s digit.
Or otherwise use a stick, broom handle, fishing rod, oboe ... whatever takes your fancy.
