If that's too awkward, maybe news items could be PM'd to the moderators of the news forums (or a special username set up just for news to avoid clogging individual members' mailboxes) and added after a quick check of sources and a tidy up of spelling and whatnot.

I was thinking this same thing. Set up a joint account, or even have a team of moderators handling the news who could post the contents of confirmed, verified and worthy news items in the forum. Then everyone could contribute, but moderation of the information TW puts out would come before anyone else could read it.
