Exactly. I guess Bowie was going for a "popular sleaze" feel on the original that suited both the lyric and its place as scene setter for the album. The problem is nowadays the Stones sound is institutionalized, not sleazy, so updating to the sound of the little sex midget is inspired. The live version I saw went on and on too, so it had a real jam feeling to it.
