Gosh, but you Germans really do think literally than laterally.

An English friend swears to me that "diamond" in Britspeak is an adjective and it means brilliant. He calls me a "diamond bird".

I've also heard that Bowie simply wanted to juxtapose a girl's best friend (diamonds) with a man's (dogs).

All of which leads me to conclude that "dogs made out of diamonds" would be a laughable mistranslation.
