Of course it made him the person he was, that is what life does to you.
If anyone is being pious it is you, with your rose tinted views on Bowie. He is human, humans make mistakes, hopefully they learn by them, Bowie did, many do not.
And yeah I agree with you letting a company release your recordings and then tying their hands so that they cannot release any unreleased materials is much worse than consuming copious amounts of drugs.
