Could it have been something to do with Terry? An intensely personal situation. For a man who has put a lot of work into restoring past relationships, and having much better present ones, it must hurt him so much how he handled the situation with Terry. I'm sure he did all that he could at the time, but when his life improved and he thought back over that particular relationship, who knows. Maybe his biggest mistake was not trying harder to help Terry.
