Thinking about this seriously, his biggest mistake might have been starting to smoke. The drugs may or may not have helped him creatively, but either way he seems to have got through them with no long term health damages, whereas 60 a day for 40 years is probably what caused his heart attack. My guess is that heart attack effectively ended his career in all but name.
