A bit of a trick on your side, Adam, to occupy Shane McGowan for your country only because he sings of Australian veterans celebrating war horror as triumph (or does Shane have any Aussie roots?).
No trick at all because the song was not written by Shane but rather a little known Australian called Eric Bogle. Granted, I am not sure if I have heard Eric's version but I will be interested when I finally hear it. I just love McGowan's voice and delivery and the simple arrangement.

And they didn't even win that battle. A top class song. Truly and thoroughly brilliant.
I agree totally. I think it is to Rum, Sodomy and the Lash what 'Rock n Roll Suicide' or 'The Bewlay Brothers' are to their respected albums.

[Dara] such gory delights as "Sadie The Cleaning Lady".
Matt sure has a sadistical musical streak in him.
That song would get regularly played to old John as his 'most embarassing musical moment' - his 'Laughing Gnome'. But Farnham does get much credit around more commercial musical circles. Tina Turner and Queen are big fans and although Bowie does have a personal record for his most consecutive shows at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (a total of 8), I am afraid that Farnham probably doubled that at the same venue around the same time Bowie set his own record. It's all a bit unfortunate that he gets elevated to such heights.
