“I never had much of a relationship with the Beatles or Rolling Stones, but I did with individuals like Mick Jagger and John Lennon…John was the only one I got to know from the Beatles, and unfortunately it was toward the end of his life. I first met John in the middle Seventies when I was doing Young Americans. It was an inspiration to work with him, but it was one of those associations that last about the length of the recording. We didn't see each other for another year. Then we started to pick up on what was becoming a very instructive and deep relationship. Having gone to art school, a lot of the stuff we talked about went into the world of art, why an artist wants to do things in the first place, and all of that. It gets very melodramatic, but it's the kind of relationship that one savors, and it's something you don't forget easily.”
