KROQ Acoustic Show

September 10, 1997

L.A.'s world famous KROQ did a Backstage with Bowie private show for 200 people as a rehearsal for his shows that week at the Hollywood Athletic Club and Universal Amphitheater.

At 6:00 a.m. on that morning KROQ people would show up at a specified location and the first 100 fans that were there with something proving that they were a Bowie fan would receive a ticket to the private show later that day. So, I called in sick for work, my son, who was 8, ditched school (cultural education is very important!) and we arrived at the designated location at about 3:00 a.m. and we barely made it into the first 100 to show up! A few hours later the KROQ people showed up and started going through the line. When they got to us my son showed them our book of Bowie photos and I had my autographed 8x10 photo with David and I also showed them my Bowie tattoo. They gave us tickets to get in another line later that morning...

So, about 9:00 a.m. we were in another line to get the real tickets that would tell us when & where this private show would be later that day. Finally about 10:30 a.m. we had our tickets! Each ticket was valid for 2 people so we could have sold one but I decided to keep it as a souvenir. At 3:00 p.m. we lined up to go backstage at Universal Amphitheater only to be told that David's flight from San Francisco had been delayed for an hour due to bad weather.

Finally, about 4:30 or 5:00 that afternoon, David showed up along with Reeves Gabrel to perform an acoustic set live on the radio and answer our questions. We were about 3 rows back and it was so wonderful to see David again! He sounded wonderful and looked great! I honestly can't tell you how long it lasted, about 45 minutes? After waiting in 3 lines, 13 hours later we were finally seeing David again! If anyone has this taped from the radio, please contact me at: duraninxs@yahoo.com. I don't have it on tape since I was there!

It ended all too quickly just giving us enough time to get ready for the show that night! We were fortunate enough to see 3 Bowie shows in 2 days! Oddly enough, the part my son liked best was our worst seats that were halfway back on the 2nd night because he could see everything happening on the stage and loved the huge eyeball balloons that David threw out into the audience each night! More Bowie stories to come...

P.S. Have any of you ever gotten in trouble at work for being "sick" when you were actually at a Bowie event? During early 1997 I kept cutting it too close. I told my boss my son was sick and I had to leave work early...so I could go to the Tonight Show when David was on and 3 people from work and 1 of my daycare providers all saw me on TV! Then when I went to the above mentioned private show, I again called in sick and the next day a co-worker goes "Oh, I heard that live David Bowie thing on KROQ yesterday. Were you there?" right in front of my boss! I said, "Um, I was out sick." They all knew the truth...
