David Bowie WWW Guestbook for July 1996

Thank you for visiting the David Bowie File. Here are some user's comments for July, 1996.

Jeremy - This is a GREAT site! Thanks for telling me about it. You know how I love Bowie!! I'll be away for a few days, so call me on Monday instead of Thursday, okay? Love to all...

Toti, I derive great pleasure from quoting lines from Bowie's lyrics, and I am glad you liked it. Denis, of course I would love to catch up with you, but there is no such thing as a convenient time, unless you count this Friday at 9:00 P.M. my time. Josie, I would only be telling lies if I told you that Telling Lies had been released here. Ho hum. I need new Bowie stuff soon. Email is happening in the next couple of days, and hopefully it will work this time.

You can go on dreaming every night,
But I'm not letting you out of my sight,
I'm-a-ten times the man than any guy around
But you're just itchin'-twichin'-itchin' for a break

Oh Matt, please forgive me! It's just that I haven't heard from my big brother in so long. I was truly convinced that my family had dropped off the face of the internet. How is Gran by the way? I must give her a ring. Thank you, Denis, for refreshing my memory. I don't know how I could've forgotten that. I have been very busy. I'll be going back to my university in a few weeks, so I'll inform everyone of my e-mail address change before then. Hello to Hel! I'll be seeing you soon! The Beatles song is in fact Oh Darling and someone else pointed out. It comes off of Abbey Road, my all time favorite Beatles album. Has the Telling Lies single come out in the U.S.? Helen2? Hel? Matt???

Hello, whatīs with all this beatles stuff? Well I at least like Bowie more then the Beatles. Denis did you recieve my e-mail? Well I hope you did, anyway, thanks Matt for that cool verse from cygnet comittee, thatīs such a cool song. I thaink that when Bowie says "The thinker sitts alone, growing older and so bitter" he means that if you sit down and really think about this crappy world youīll be depressed and bitter, well thatīs what I think it means at least, of course I have no idea of what Bowie ment for it to mean. Hi Noam Iīm waiting for your e-mail. Just got "Portrait in Flesh" itīs really good. Bye

OK, Hel, Noam and Jenneh. The Beatles song is "Oh, Darling". Although I don't think Bowie took the "break down and cry" line from that song, it's possible Noam remembered it when hearing "Young Americans".

Emilio and Rex - do you maybe mean "broke down and cried"? There is a Beatles song with that line in it. I can't remember the name of the song but I think the line goes "when you told me you didn't need me anymore, well you know, I nearly broke down and cried. Oh darling..." I don't know it that helps or not.

Emilio, I cannot place a Beatles song with the lyric "break- down and cry..." They have a song on the white album called Cry Baby Cry with the lyric "Cry baby cry, make your mother sigh. Your old enough to know better so cry baby cry." If anyone else can place the line in Beatles song let us know.

Noam, are you sure you don't mean the "I heard the news today, oh boy" bit? That was taken from the Beatles song "A Day In The Life", which begins with "I read the news today, oh, boy". I don't remember any Beatles song with "break down and cry". Does anyone?

Hey! This place is slow! I haven't been around for five days, and there were only 20 or so new messages... Where are you at MIworld? I never saw a bowie chat there, except for one time, and then I didn't get any invetation. Are you hiding the room somehow? When I come in I don't use my normal name, but I still want to enter the bowie chat. What shell I do? Do you think that the end of Young Americans, when he says 'Ain't there one damn song who can make me break down and cry' is kinda about a Beatles song, which have a 'Break down and cry' line in it. I don't remember the name, but when I was young I really loved it (Kill me...). Well never mind. Byebye.

Hello all. Hello especially to my name-sake Jen! Josie, the "T-Rex/TV" controversary I mentioned last week was about the line in All The Young Dudes in which Ian Hunter sings "Man I need a TV when I got T-Rex". Surely you recall the debate we had here over whether he had fluffed the lyrics or not, what their true meaning might be, etc, a few weeks ago? Well, Bowie cleared up the ambiguity at Phoenix when he sang "Man I didn't need a TV, I had T-Rex"- very thoughful of him, ta very much! Toti, you are right, PART of one of Bowie's November 1995 Wembley gigs was (later) broadcast on BBC Radio 1. I have it on tape. However, it is only about 30 minutes long; good though. Matt, Ilsa, Helen, and whoever, I will be at the chat site until I post again here to say I've left it; I HOPE I manage to meet up with one of you (at least) after such a long gap.

Hi Hel, Matt (who STILL hasn't e-mailed me), Gran and Denis (where are you?)! This page has been very slow lately. I'm slowly upgrading my record player system so I've been listening to my Bowie vinyls a little more. I've seen a couple copies of an interview disc at the local repo place. I think it's put out by Great Performers. Anyway, has anyone listened to it? I'm thinking about making yet another purchase.

Hi, Matt: I figured that is what happened; the site was going unstable. Glad you spoke with Ilsa! Thanks for the CD: I'll get yours off tomorrow in the mail. WOW, is this place deserted lately, or what? Hi, Josie! I will surely snap some pics if I run into the short-haired red-headed Bowie person at the Basquiat premier....hope, hope! Of course, there is NO evidence he will be there BUT I will be prepared just in case! I discovered Miramax gave me somewhat 'bad' info on the theater: the Angelika Film Center (Basquiat premiere) is on Houston, but at Mercer Street, not Bleeker. The date is the 9th of August! And I communicated with Ilsa today, and Matt: all still well. We will have to meet in Philly this fall, after Patti returns! Well, OK, now is when all those who have been off doing other things for a long time suddenly show up and flame me for posting this! Well, flame away, and note I have a new email address, too! And DENIS, where in heck are YOU lately? luv, Hel

Hi everybody. Noam, I recently watched the video from the Glass spider show, and I canīt say that I enjoyed it very very much, but there were some cool songs like Time and Blue jean, and yeah those damn dancers they suck. Does anyone know if BBC has broadcasted some of Bowieīs shows, I heard that one of the shows he did in Wembley in nov.ī95 was broadcasted, and if so, does anyone have a copy.

Just for the record: the two threads that have not been restored to the Message Board are the one about the new Bowie book (posted by me, with follow-ups by Anker, Harry, fed up and myself) and "Ziggy's Eyebrows (or lack of)" posted by dg with follow-ups by Lady Stardust, Thomas Jerome Newton (who retitled it "Ziggy's Eyebrows (or lack of)/Gabriel's lice") and Donna Speed. These messages were placed between "A Poem for Tango" and "More on Bowie's Idols". Perhaps I've been reading too many suspense stories, but I'm still trying to figure out the Webmaster's motives!

Have you noticed that the latest messages have disappeared from the Message Board? Although the Webmaster denies it, I think he does censor the page once in a while. The last time it happened, I remember there was a really disgusting message saying nasty things about David. He can't erase just one message so he has to crop a whole chunk. Now, what could have been the reason? I'll check in my disk cache at home, though it won't have the messages anyway, just the titles.

Anyway, I'm glad you found the pic of David. I am having an IMPOSSIBLE time trying to find someplace that has SECONDS with the interview and the rest of that photo shoot! I will try when I get down to NYC soon! Can't wait! Madly hoping David might decide to show up at the Basquiat opening in the Village August 9th...we'll see. Hans:I don't believe Jagger ever got it on with Angie. In her book "Backstage Passes" she likens him to a horney goat when describing his one and only come-on which she rejected. But I guess that doesn't nessarily mean he wasn't in love with her. Still it's all smutty gossip really.

Hi! I got a birthday present form my friends - apperantly one of my friends' sister was a Bowie freak a long while ago. She has about 5 videos, which I haven't watched yet, but shoul incloude Glass Spider tour show, and Ziggy Startdust (I have that one already) and some other stuff, and there's this folder with lot's and lot's of old articles and stuff. I think most of it is just dumb - alot of small pictures, and old interviews, but there's a 15 pin set of him, which is great, a biography (David Bowie Black Book by Miles...) and theres a songs book, which doesn't look to be official but they have some strange stuff on STS - 'Throwing dust in other's (lovers) eyes", "one magical moment/Thouches (Such is) the stuff from our dreams/One moment (Are woven)", "Here in my room of floating puluttion (over looking the ocen)", "one magical moment/From gather to eacca (From kether to malkuth (Crown to Kingdom in Hebrew...))", "Making sure one stays (white stains)", "and once there were/Thunder and storms (Sunbirds to soar with)", "And you (who will) connect me with love", "Wonderfull - wonder wings (Wonder *who*, wonder who, wonder when)", "in faves and child (evasive and shy)", "the sound (side) effects of the cocaine). That's all in STS. Hope it wasn't to boring. I know I would never read it through. But it is wierd. Well ta-ta. Byebye.

Hi all... Just checkin inđ. Was anyone actually succcessful in seeing anything of interest on the Phoenix CU-SeeMe broadcast? From what I could tell, they didnđt feature Bowie but there was mention of an interview? Anyone know more? On another note, I'd be really interested in getting a copy of "Vampires and Human Flesh" from the Scary Monsters sessions on CD (Midnight Beat MB CD021). Does anyone have it or know where I can obtain a CD/Tape copy? I realise as it was released in 94 the chancesof finding it are getting slimmer all the time. Anyway, no harm in trying. Hi! I just got angry by Deniss's review (No hard feeling). It's just that he said EXACTLY the same thing before All The Young Dudes over here, and at the end of Moonage Daydream he said "This one's about love". Just shows you how spontanous they get, those artists... Nevermind, I'll get over it. I keep listening to TMWSTW, and it's a GREAT album - They're just taller childen, that's all, after all. Great line... Byebye.

Well, the Phoenix Festival is into the second of it's four days, and Bowie headlined last night. No doubt Patti will give us a PROPER review in the fullness of time, but I heard the last part of it as it was broadcast live on BBC Radio 1, so I'll report on that bit of it, at least. Radio 1, in it's wisdom, only began broadcasting Bowie's set about an hour into it; during that hour they were only playing records (rather than broadcasting any other act from one of the many minor stages at Phoenix, for instance), so I can only assume this irritating practise was due to copyright reasons- ie. they must only have been permitted to broadcast PART of the gig to foil the bootleggers, or whatever. Anyhow, the songs broadcast were these: Heroes/Strangers When We Meet/Lust For Life/All The Young Dudes/White Light White Heat/Moonage Daydream. Each song was SUPERBLY performed; the band were incredibly 'tight', and each song SOMEHOW was made to sound new and fresh. Tracks (as I've listed them) 2-4 made up the first encore, and 5-6 the second. Bowie sounded REALLY enthusiastic, he seemed to be enjoying himself. He said goodnight after Heroes (which fooled nobody!), then, on returning to the stage, said "Want some more? We've got lots more!". He introduced Lust For Life as "A song I wrote in 1976 with Iggy Pop."; he introduced the band during the intro to this song. Before All The Young Dudes he said "This is a song I wrote for you guys in 1973; it's STILL for you guys!" Interestingly, apropos the recent discussion here, he sang the disputed 'TV/T-Rex' line as "Man I didn't need a TV, I had T-Rex"- perhaps he has been reading our comments on the matter...! At the end of the song he shouted "The 21st Century is going to be BRIGHT!", to a huge roar from the crowd. He introduced White Light White Heat as "An underground song from way back, by one of the bands I was influenced by when I was a kid." Moonage Daydream had an explosively staccatto ending (like in the last Ziggy Stardust gig, only more so); before the final blast Bowie said "By the way we think, don't we, all you need is love". So, now you know.....

Set list Ahoy Hall Rotterdam 16 July 1996 Intro (Telling Lies) / The Motel / Baby Universal / Look Back In Anger / We Prick You / Scary Monsters / The Hearts Filthy Lesson / Outside / Aladdin Sane / The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction / The Man Who Sold The World / Hello Spaceboy / Breaking Glass / Telling Lies / Jump They Say / Under pressure / Heroes / Moonage Daydream / Encores: A Small Plot Of Land / Strangers When We Meet / Band intro - Lust For Life / White Light White Heat / All The Young Dudes / Outro: Ode To Joy David and his band played a great show at the Ahoy Hall in Rotterdam. It was the 7th time David played at this hall: '76 (2 shows), '78 (3 shows) and '90. The show was not sold out and for this reason a part off the hall was closed. I guess that about 5000 people were inside. The show took place in a very nice atmosphere and David and the band seemed to enjoy it. Before the show started a tape with Telling Lies was played. This version was a little different than the version he played live. It had sometimes very loud bass sound in it. Then the show really began with The Motel. After this song David said "and for the rest of this evening music from David Bowie and his band" followed by a nice version of Baby Universal. The next song was introduced as a very old song and was Look Back In Anger. During this song a big Teddy Bear was thrown at the stage, David picked it up hold it a little while with him and then he put it on the chair next to the table that was on stage. After this he started a great version of We Prick You. Just when David sang "where have all the flowers gone" a lot of flowers were thrown at the stage and David was really surprised a smiled to the audience. Also during the rest of the show lots of things were thrown to the stage. Scary Monsters, The Hearts Filthy Lesson and Outside were nice and then came a very good version of Alladin Sane. The piano from Mike Garson sounded great with very nice vocals from David and Gail Ann with parts from On Broadway and Where Have All The Good Times Gone in it. After Alladin Sane David thanked the audience for all the nice dolls that were thrown to the stage and then started a brilliant version of The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction. From The Man Who Sold The World to Moonage Daydream the songs were played as usual. The encores started with a great version of A Small Plot Of Land followed by Strangers When We Meet. The band into was followed by a great version of Lust For Life. During this song when David sang "he’s gone do another striptease" a bra was thrown on the stage, David picked it up and put it at his ear and finally throw it back into the audience. The show ended with stunning versions of White Light White Heat and All The Young Dudes. The crowd wanted more but the lights went on and the Ode To Joy tape was played. I think this was a very good concert, David and the band were in a very good mood and David voice was also great. There are only three more shows to come and than the recordings of new songs. I really hope we'll see David on stage in the near future because "He Belongs in Rock 'N Roll. Case

Hi, there!! I saw David live last friday and it was terrrrific!!! Much better than the average Outside tour concerts I've seen around Europe. He sung Heroes, All the young dudes, Aladdin sane, White light/White heat and Lust for life!!! Then Saturday I saw Lou Reed and Iggy Pop (also at the Doctor Music festival in Spain). Lou was great and Iggy unstoppable. The three friends in just two days!!! I couldn't believe my eyes (and ears). David also sung his new song Telling Lies and it's very good. Is it already a single? When the next album?? Please, someone answer!!!!

Hello to all my fellow Bowie fans. I don't have time to check in as often as I like, but I am happy to say the posting is much more interesting the last couple of weeks. I have a question, I'd like to pick up a cd of the Outside tour, I understand there are a few bootlegs available. Which one is the best and how do I go about buying one? Any help would be appreciated. I understand "Trainspotting" is going to be released in the U.S. soon, I'd like to see it. Has anyone seen "I Shot Andy Warhole"? Is it any good? Emilio, I am really like that. I will buy everything I see with David Bowie's name on it, regardless of whether it has any material I don't already have. Hey I'm fooling myself if I thought I wouldn't buy the All Saints CD if I saw it. Just sometimes I feel a bit cynical towards such releases. OK, it's July 15th (here in Perth at least) - no "Telling Lies" released here - has anyone else noticed a new addition to the CD singles section of their favourite music stall?

I guess I should come here more often. This is getting better than the Message Board. Dara's gone? Oh, no! Who's going to post follow-ups to my messages, now? Anyway, good luck at your new job and come back soon. The fact that he'll be out of the Net for a while reminds me that there certainly are other intelligent Bowie fans who haven't got wired yet. Matt, you're right, we don't need the "All Saints" CD. But then, we don't need those singles full of pointless remixes either. That's the problem of becoming a "serious collector". You start because you like the music, but once you're bitten by the record-collecting bug, there's no turning back. I wonder what stamps and coin collectors can do with their prized items except staring adoringly at them. At least we can hear our CDs, even if we don't necessarily like all of them.

Well that was just me making assumptions Harry. I thought that living in Melbourne you would have to be an AFL fanatic!!!! I looked every where for those apple house releases, but could only find titles by U2 (just about every concert they have ever done) and the likes of Sting. The Bowie ones just didn't make it to Perth, which is a shame because they were so cheap (here they were $AUS5 - to give our friends from the rest of the world an idea of just how cheap they were the price of CD singles is about $AUS8) These Apple house releases were sometimes excellent quality, and 60 minutes plus!!!! Once again this side of the country misses out Harry!!!

Matt... Agreed... it's not the collectability persay, 'Collectable' would seem to suggest that the number one reason to purchase such items is to sell them again at inflated prices once they become scarce... (how many of your Bowie CD's would you ever be willing to part with, even IF someone offered you ridiculous sums...? For me, its not even a remote possibility, but SHARING the music, now that's another story altogether! When Apple House music released those few live CDs here a while back, I experienced mixed reactions. It was great because the fans now had an opportunity to hear those concerts for a reasonable sum but at the same time I cringed, having scoured the earth a few years back for the KBFH Glass Spider series and paying very good money for it! What a shame about the Oy Vey baby Video as now they sell VCRs with dual (Pal & NTSC) playback capability... ARRRGH! On the other subject, I'm a Kiwi, so who do you think I barrack for? The All Blacks, of course and I don't think their chances of winning the Premiership are very high at all. Cheers til next time.

In other online news, Bowie has been steadily climbing the definitive online album and singles charts. Outside has climbed all the way to 22, and the Ultimate Singles Collection is at 34. In the Singles chart, Hallo Spaceboy is at 24 and rising. To cast your vote, go to URL http://www.xs4all.nl/~jojo/index.html and follow the links to the Albums and Singles charts. Also, remember that an album or single doesn't have to be in the charts to vote for it (so you can vote for The Buddah of Suburbia).

Show number 97 for me. I'm going to go over to the chat room and see if anyone is about. If not, take care all. I miss you. Patti

Hi Decybel: that's a tough one! I think EVERYTHING including peoples' natures are arrayed over a spectrum...meaning, there are many many similarities and varying degrees of difference, as in the old 'bell curve' model. The differences among people occur due to different basic personalities (genetic?) and due to different 'nurture' (things that happened to each person, how the reacted to it, what they did or did not learn from it)...and due to cultural indoctrination. Many people never question 'how they are' and merrily go along being whatever they 'normally' are: I think David and the people who tend to be his fans DO question many aspects of life quite a bit, and are rather independent thinkers, and tend to act from inner motivations more than the 'herd animal' type of person. I think that being always willing to LEARN and change are really important, and keep life more fun. Getting lazy, arrogant, etc: those things detract from a person! Well, that's the best I can do to answer THAT question for you. No one has elected me 'god' yet so bear in mind I may be wrong; this is just MY opinion on all this! Have a great summer, OK? Maybe we'll all see you here again in the fall...Hel

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!!! Hi Hel, thanks for that true and exact answer of yours. You seem to be realy nice. Anyways, This might be my last day here so if you can answer as quik as possible I would appreciat. Do you think people are all the same or are all different? You know, it depends on how you see it, it's like: is you glass half empty or half full, ... kinde of. I think every body is the same (original) but not everybody want to show it. But originality, is being different?!?!?!? And we can't be all the same if we are original (different).... tAKE CARE, LOVE YOU TILL THUESDAY ( WELL I MIGHT STRETCH IT TILL WEDNESDAY).

Harry, I want to answer the question you asked me on the message board here, because there is more chance of you seeing it here! Recently I contacetd BMG Australia (well the BMG offices in Perth anyway) about Telling Lies but they knew nothing of it. It is a possibility that it will be a European release only. To answer another of your questions from a few days back, the Tin Machine video was not released down under, but I once saw it in a music store here in Perth, that is well known for importing videos and CD's. Because American videos are not PAL (is that right?) and therefore cannot be played on Oz video recorders, I would daresay it was imported from Europe (possibly Britain or Germany). I didn't buy it due to a lack of money at the time, which is a shame really because I have never seen it again. By the way - who do you think is going to win the premiership this year? (C'arn West Coast!!!).

I am curious. The talk of the All Saints CD has started me thinking (shock, horror!!). I just wonder sometimes: do the rest of you think that owning a "collectors item" like All Saints is more important than the music itself? I mean there isn't actually any music on it that is not available elsewhere. I am afraid that I have become a little cynical. I think Mr. Bowie was playing a little joke on the collectors when he put that particular compilation together. I am sorry Mr. Bowie, I'm not interested in paying a high price for music I already own. I don't care how rare it is. It's the music that counts.

Hi, Decybel>>> well, David IS in my generation!! But most people find it too frightening to 'stand out in the crowd' so they try to conform somehow. For awhile, they even 'conformed' by COPYING David...so of course, HE changed! He was not about to stand for any of THAT nonsense! Being yourself is always the best approach...it takes courage, flair, creativity...and is usually more fun!! Haven't you ever sat at a party wondering why all the rest thought it was FUN? Usually it is NOT! I think David has inspired a lot of people to just be true to themselves rather than to follow mindless 'trends'. And of course he doesn't want to ever BECOME a mindless trend himself. As for yuppies, well, life IS easier with money, as even David would agree, but MONEY should not drive a person's every action! But, living for 'pure art' has its own set of difficulties. Well, that is enough bad philosophy from ME for one day!!! Hel

Hi Hel, I'm glad to see that people of your generation can still like Bowie and not have all turned into cashoholique like a lot of people I met. Bowie hated the yuppies as much as the hippies I think anyways. Can you tell me why people always try to dress, talk, act, ect. like everybody else when you can be different and special (certainely mor interressting) being you?! ...

I'm pretty sure the 'All Saints' CD I have is not a bootleg, but having never heard of the differences between the two or seen the two of them side by side it's always hard to tell. Actually in this case would it not be a pirate rather than a bootleg? Anyway I just know I got my copy right around Christmas 1993 from someone I trust so I really feel it is authentic. When did the pirates show up? Do they have the same Bowie artwork on the cover? Is the track listing in anyway different? I too would be curious to find out. Hi Noam, I don't think people have been deliberately ignoring you, just keep posting someone will have answers to your questions or comments.

It seems this bootleg has little or nothing to do with the original "All Saints" CD. Or does it? Who has more information on this Bowie-Eno Christmas gift? Just when you think you've seen it all in terms of teasing collectors with material they will have a hard time obtaining (e.g., the promo-only "Bang Bang" live CD, Paul McCartney's Russian album) Bowie comes up with the ultimate collector's item. I don't think he did it just to please his friends...

Missing Link in the UK were advertising a copy a while back for an inordinate sum... something like AUS$350. Keep a tight grip on yours Hel2... Harry, I have asmall confession to make. The caller who made the comment about the starman was from Queensland and female. I have a recording of that interview and everytime I listen to it that is the comment which makes me laugh the most. If you had thought about it, you would have realised it would have been impossible for someone from Perth to call as we are two hours behind you here and that interview was two hours old when it went to air in Perth. I am sorry. I just thought that I wanted to share that comment with the people of the message board, but I thought it sounded better if I said I had actually posted it. I am a fraud. Hello my family. I unexpectedly have the night off so here I am. I am working on getting into the kitchen--never fear! Oh Matt, please do e-mail me! Gran, I'll give you a ring on Saturday (probably in the morning). Hi Helen and Denis! Yes Decybel, Helen is right (and Patti has told me this too). David has a straight set of choppers. I think that crookedness has character, but then again, does he really care what I think? Has anyone heard of Jane County the transexual? Apparently he/she had a falling out with Bowie in the '70s because David was jealous of Jane's EXTREME eccentricity. Jane said (in this radio interview) that David borrowed from weirdos and his gayness was all one big act because he never was all that weird or gay. I was a bit amused at the whole thing. I think JANE's jealous of David. After all, David's music really is music and Jane's, well, is...is...is...

Hi everyone! Started to comb through the Bowie noticeboard today and it made interesting (if not slow) reading. Thanks. Matt, check my response to your 'Question for Bowie?' of a coupla nights back. Couldn't believe it when I read it. Small world. Hels, don't fret... you're NOT a bootlegger, you're just keeping the faith. Anyway the boots I get are mainly from Italy where by law, they are required to deposit a small plot of land ++ oops ++ money into an account specially set up for the Artist. It remains to be seen whether the said artists ever get to collect. Plus I recall reading somewhere (maybe Pimm's Book of Concert Tapes) David being asked about his attitudes to boots and from memory, he said he would like all owners of bootlegs out there to send him a token payment to cover his loss of revenue. Fair enough. ...except that does pose certain problems logistically especially for the avid collector with tombs of CDS and other collectibles. The italian connection's working well for me... Clear conscience, clean recordings! Hey Hels... that Elephant Man Video wasn't in a small red box perchance? "Such responsibility... it's up to you and me"

DECYBEL
MONTREAL, QUEBEC - Tuesday, July 09, 1996 at 08:47:09 (PDT)
And yes, Decybel, many of us DO think David is a genius, the 'Renaisance Man', so to speak, and that he is a fantastic singer, song-writer, actor, dancer, mime, poet, artist, intellect...the list goes ON and ON! Do you have an e-mail address? Also, try http://www.davidbowie.com for the OUTSIDE comment board, which has many very interesting 'topics' on it that you can add to if you like. There is (as always) stuff there that is less strictly 'Bowie-related' (and has caused flack there too) but you can just ignore it. At least there, you don't HAVE to look at it (don't 'click'). It is not that the long-time contributors here are ignoring David, but that we've SAID it all many times!! But rest assured, we DO LOVE DAVID and his work, that is why we are here, not just random 'chatters' who are picking on this site. In fact, some of us have become good friends over the past several months. So scroll back to see what has been happening. You'll notice there WAS a huge 'spike' in the 'chat-rate' for awhile, and we are truly TRYING to address that! But welcome. Sorry Lyon, I was in a bad mood earlier. If you knew the whole tale, you'd be more sympathetic to the recent attempts to keep in touch and get over to chatsites...! Hel
Hel (Hgilbert@Uconnvm.uconn.edu)
USA - Tuesday, July 09, 1996 at 08:31:15 (PDT)
Actually, Decybel and Lyon, we have been working toward TRYING to get everyone to move chat to the chatsites, etc. If you look back a bit you'd see that things have improved a LOT!! And by the way, have you tried the OUTSIDE comment board for Bowie-related discussions and info? That one can be 'stacked' more by topic and subject, and is not 'linear' like this one. All in all you are RIGHT that these sites ARE for Bowie's fans and BOWIE info. BUT, it is also a 'free speech' issue, and we are trying to work it out so that it is Bowie-related BUT not unfriendly. Also, there are things going on you are not aware of that might change your perspective if you knew the entire story. SO, be patient, be nice, contribute some BOWIE info if you can....but realize that most of the people you are currently dissing have been on the site a long time and ARE tremendously dedicated BOWIE fans. If all you want is 'dry' Bowie facts, there are a LOT of books you can read!! Let's all try to get along, OK? Hel

Hi to all: Den, I was inadvertently offline all day Monday. Will be here only briefly today. Hi, Harry: yes, there is a copy of Elephant Man about locally, from a Broadway show. I'm not sure I SHOULD illegally copy it so I am trying to find out if I can legally obtain a copy. I'll keep you posted. AARRGGHH--too busy. Hi Josie, Matt, Dara: I'll get back to you all later. Special 'hi' to Ilsa if she manages to get here. And yes, D did have many teeth crowned! He looks good BOTH ways. As to the 'server down' it means just that! You just have to keep trying at intervals until they get it back 'up' again. The instructions are OK: but sites can be volatile and occasionally need routine maintenance, too! You have to 'take the site down' to work on it. Hel

Spent quite an unrewarding night trying to get into the Miworld chat site but no luck. Would there have been anyone there if I'd been successful??? This PDT thing must stand for PRETTY DAMN TRYING... Anyone out there seen the Oy Vey Baby live Video. Comments? Also, where was it made available? Never saw it here in Oz. Off to grab some dinner. "Bring me more fish... throw it down by my side..." Dara, thanks for the info on Open the Dog... it sounds just the ticket. My next question is where do I get it from? Presumably, a place like CD Music Co? On another note, I've tried to access the chatsite at Miworld with no success. It just says Server down. Pardon my ignorance (just a lowly grapho'!) but the net is still somewhat of a mystery. I have noted the instructions from Denis and others when Erika was having trouble the other day and followed them to the letter... but no success. Can anyone help?

Hi Harry. I agree Live Inside is really excellent. Open The Dog is the best I've heard from the European leg of the tour. The setlist is significantly different from Live Inside: no NIN obviously, or I'm Deranged, or Joe The Lion, but has the following tracks not on Live Inside: The Motel, Boys Keep Swinging, My Death, DJ and Moonage Daydream.

I recall reading through the guest book on Friday night, you mentioned something about the Elephant Man on VIDEO, but on rescrolling through I can't find it!?!!. Now THAT is really something I'd like to see. Is it the whole performance, and more importantly, have you had the 'courage of your convictions'? (bad turn of phrase that... sorry) Do let me know how you go. I really have been dissappointed ove the years that nothing more was made out of that performance. Thanks Dara! That confirms all my worst suspicions. This has been my first little communicado on the net and its quite an experience to be swapping pearls over that vast distance. I've had a great day not the least of which was being able to enjoy listening to 'Live Inside' at work. However I now need a little pick me up and was wondering if anyone out there could suggest another Outside Tour cd(s) that comes close to the quality of the KTS release I have. Most of you ardent 'philes out there will know the track listing backwards but for reference it's: Outside/scary/Reptile/hallo space/hurt/look back/ deranged/hearts/voyeur/oxford/outside/andy warhol/ breaking glass/TMWSTW/prick/joe/small plot/nite flights/ band intro/under pressure/teenage wild/strangers. Obviously, if the tracks could vary, that would be an added bonus. Looking forward to hearing something about those tasty tunes I know must be out there... and remember, what ever nonsense you net'sters get up to: "The bruises won't show if you wear long sleeves" Catchya'

Hi Guys... Just popped back in to ask if anyone knew why David, after god-knows how many years of living with crooked teeth (I always thought they gave him character!), suddenly decided to get 'em fixed? I know this may sound somewhat 'anally retentive' but it always seemed to me that he mustn't have given a stuff or had other more important things to think about. Some of my friends suggested it may owe a little to low self esteem! Imagine our surprise when shortly after this became a hot topic of discussion we happened to be watching the long playing video for BTWN and I spy a set of very STRAIGHT choppers! Can anyone shed some light on this little mystery? Harry

Hi Matt. The three-way trade pattern sounds like a great idea, as Europe-US-Oz pretty much covers the entire Bowie world right now. I'll have a search of the Dublin record stores for SWWM (incl. Hello, Matt, Den, Dara: well, I think setting up a three-way trade pattern is an excellent idea. We'll have to work out the details. Ilsa phoned me yesterday, Matt and Den, and is having terrible trouble with NETSCAPE despite trying what sounded to me like an excellent and sensible approach to installing it at Patti's. Hi everybody! The show was great, although only 90 minutes. (so was Ziggy Stardust TMP...). David played only five songs from Outside, and that's a pitty, nevermind. It was nice. He didn't give any encores. That wasn't very nice... The set list included Look Back In Anger/Scary Monsters/The Heart's Filthy Lesson/Outside/Alladin Sane/Andy Warhol/The Voyeus Of Utter Destruction (As Beuty)/The Man Who Sold The World/Hallo Spaceboy/Breaking Glass/Baby Universal/Jump They Say/Under Pressure/"Heroes"/Strangers When We Meet/All The Young Dudes/White Light White Heat/Moonage Daydream. According to the radio it should have included Telling Lies and Lust for life, but didn't. Shit. I heard Telling Lies at the beginning. It was played before the show, on the speakers, but the playback quality was bad, and nobody, except me, recognized it. It's really good. THERE WERE NO T-SHIRTS! SHIT! If anybody goes to a show with T-shirts, and has some spare cash think (about rubber and think about glue) about me... I will pay you back... Please... And BTW if someone can get the Strangers When We Meet with Get Real I will also call him/her my hero. That's all. Gotta go. Bye bye love. BTW I got 33 minutes from the recorded from radio. That is all they broadcasted, but it's great quality.

Hi Hel. Thanks for the very kind offer: if David insists on releasing different versions of singles in the future, a strategic alliance whereby I send you the European release for the US one would be very convenient! Also, if you still have a US copy of HFL, hold it for me! I've been trying to order it from a number of online stores and they all say it's deleted/discontinued. Hello to all my friends on July 5. Matt: you have a MUCH wider selection of Bowie CDs in YOUR local shop!! I have had to search over the years here to build up my own collection PLUS often 'special order' them. And the only difference I can see between the American Buddha and the British one is: music same, BUT covers different. Difrerent pics, and the British one has EXTENSIVE liner notes by David on his then-current views on the decline of British culture/vampirism of 'world culture' by American homogenized culture from Hollywood. etc. Needless to say, all this stuff was NOT in the American release! 'Hi' to Josie and Ilsa, too. Special 'hello' to Dennis. And of course I mustn't forget Dara. Well, Basquiat opens in NYC 8/9 and I already have my hotel reservations etc and will definitely BE there! But I'll have no WWW access until the next week (hey, maybe I can track down one of those internet cafes in the Village....hmmmmm) I saw pics of David all made up like Andy with the wig and he DID look the part!! That's about it for now....oh yes, I have 2 unopened American 'Heart's Filthy Lesson' singles and would like to trade one for a 'Hallo Spaceboy' single or some such thing.... Hel

I must have missed something. What's different about Outside 2 and where can I get it. Tower Records in Philadelphia has a rather small Bowie selection, but they do have a bowie biography (a u.k. import) type thing. I've flipped through it. It's mostly about when each album was released. I've also noticed here that ryko has released a version of Santa Monica '72. I wonder what's coming out next. Matt, I'll probably be back here again Sunday. Maybe we can chat?

To 'Berliner'... The version of Loving the Alien you liked so much was recorded by Iva Davies, lead singer of "Icehouse" and is included in the Dance Performance soundtrack album "The Berlin Tapes". Also included on the CD is a mellow version of "Heroes". Its worth picking up this CD (DIVA Records P/L 17476-2, Australia Fax 61-2-9974-1229) as he also does nice reworkings of Sister Europe (Psychedelic Furs), Heaven (Talking Heads), Complicated Game (XTC), Berlin (Lou Reed), All the Way (Frank Sinatra), All Tomorrows Parties (The Velvet Underground), Let there be love (Simple Minds), Disappointed (PIL), Really Good Time (Roxy Music), At Night (Cure) and Love like blood (Killing Joke). I was lucky enough to bump into Iva after a performance of Berlin in Melbourne. I said how impressed I was with the selection of material that he'd chosen to cover and he mentioned that he'd always loved LTA and Heroes and had had many attempts at Heroes over the years but had never pulled it off to his satisfaction. Judge for yourself...

Thanks for your extensive reply, Matt. Clearly Bowie fans are spoiled for choice Down Under, unlike here. Before Outside was released, I went into Dublin's biggest store to see what they were stocking. Answer: Ziggy. That was it. At least the release of Outside stimulated them to stock the back catalogue. I'm curious about Buddha: I didn't realise there was any difference between the European and US releases. What is the difference? BTW, CDs are damn expensive here too, I now buy most of mine from one of the online Web stores. Cheaper to get it sent to me from the US, sad really.

Dara, I just want to comment on a few things you said yesterday. Yes, studies have shown that CD's down under, are more expensive than anywhere else in the Western World. It is actually cheaper to import CD's from somewhere like Tower records in Los Angeles (which is where most importers down here do so). This includes the postage. The availability of Outside? Wel I went into 78's yesterday (the best music store in Perth - how's that for advertising - I think I deserve a free CD) and in the Bowie section were all the Ryko/EMI releases (actually a mixture of both companies - officially the Sound and Vision series was released by EMI downunder) except The Singles 69-93 (because we have the Singles Collection's 1 and 2). The virgin rereleases were also there (including the U.S version of Buddha), the European version of Buddha, Outside Version 1 and 2, Santa Monica (three different releases actually), RarestOneBowie, Portrait in Flesh, his debut album, some early sixties collection thingies, the BakTaBak interview disc, Tin Machine I (virgin rerelease) and II were there. In the soundtracks section were Cat People, Absolute Beginners, Labyrinth, When The Wind Blows, Songs from the Cool World, Showgirls. All the Iggy/Bowie discs were there. In the singles section was only the Hallo Spaceboy single. So really new Perth Bowie fans would not be short of material to buy. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I have all of these (and much more) so I am short of new material to buy at the moment. Interestingly it is impossible to get bootlegs here, unless you have a contact willing to send you some.

Thanks for the info Helen2. I was wondering about that movie. Do you know why the release was so late in the U.S.? Matt, it's 6:08 p.m. EST here (6:08 a.m. for you). Why don't we meet at miworld 11:00 a.m. your time (July 5th)? I can only send private messages, but that's better than nothing! I need to talk to my big brother. And don't you worry--Gran's doing her best to get to talk with you! We love you! And if anyone's offended by the personalness of this message, get over it! Sorry for all the typos. Denis, I just e-mailed you, but I'll write more later. I don't feel so good today, so I'll keep this short. Matt, guess what I found in a record store FINALLY? A copy of Hallo Spaceboy! I was just standing there thinking, where was this months ago? I thank you again for sending me a copy. I listen to it often and think about you. I'm listening to Lou Reed's Sally Can't Dance right now. Any relevance to Lucy Can't Dance? Just kidding, that was pretty stupid. I find it funny that Outside didn't sell in Dublin. Everywhere I turn here I see a copy of Outside, yet I hardly ever see anyone in the Bowie section. Matt, don't forget about e-mailing your lil sis!!

Yes, Den, amazing isn't it? I was in Dublin's biggest record store last week, and they have practically all the Bowie CDs (even stuff like London Boy and Santa Monica), but no Outside (or Buddha or BTWN for that matter)! Outside just didn't sell at all here. Even though at least 10,000 people saw him live here and seemed to enjoy the concert, the album didn't chart. The record company pushed it hard with billboards and they were even giving "pound off" leaflets going into the concert. If even 10% of the crowd had bought it, it would probably have been Top 10 here.

WHAT!?! You're saying that it's difficult to find Outside for sale in Dublin? That's incredible. The point I was making about Outside 2, though, is that it ISN'T an Australia-only release, as I THINK Matt thought it to be. Want to come over and chat, Dara?
Denis Collins (sa0u219f@liv.ac.uk)
Liverpool, England - Wednesday, July 03, 1996 at 23:30:46 (PDT)
Noam, are you there? I just read that some guy over at the Web board heard the Israel concert was cancelled (like the St. Petersburg one). Can you confirm or (better still) deny?
Dara O'Kearney (dokearney@galvia.enet.dec.com)
Dublin, Ireland - Wednesday, July 03, 1996 at 23:15:12 (PDT)
Matt: I agree it's virtually impossible to track down even all the official releases, although it is getting easier (the Internet being an important help) to get new things. I know that the main reason for including extra tracks on the Japanese CDs is the high cost of CDs there (which makes it cheaper to buy on import, so the Japanese record company has to put something extra to entice the fans to buy). Is it the same in Australia? I've heard a lot of comments about the high price of Cds down there. One Aussie friend was telling me that even though Outside didn't sell very much down under, a guy who runs a secondhand CD shop was saying there was a big (and insatiable) demand for it second hand. Denis: I know these things are easily available in the 'bigger' countries, like UK, Germany, US and Sweden (which is a big market out of proportion to it's population). That isn't much consolation to those of us elsewhere. None of the record stores around here are stocking ANY version of Outside at the moment.

Dublin, Ireland - Wednesday, July 03, 1996 at 23:10:04 (PDT)
Your points are certainly valid, Matt, but in fact Outside 2 (with the bonus CD) is also freely available in this country. I'm waiting for you at Miworld right now.
Denis Collins (sa0u219f@liv.ac.uk)
Liverpool, England - Wednesday, July 03, 1996 at 22:14:34 (PDT)
Dara, I couldn't agree with you more. And yes Australian record companies are notorious for releasing material unavailable elsewhere. Famous recent examples are the Live in London Album by Bon Jovi (don't get me wrong here - I hate Bon Jovi), which was given away free with their last album. This was after their plans for a worldwide live album were scratched. u2's last album, Zooropa, was also rereleased with a bonus CD unavailable eleswhere. Something closer to my tastes in music was the What Goes On box set by the Velvet Underground, which was 3 CD's of still unreleased material (except here of course) which if you look at any of the discographies on the net, you won't find it. Yet it's in every decent store down here. Of course their was the bonus disc that came with Outside Version 2, which I thought could have been a lot better (ie had some unreleased stuff on it). There was also a limited edition of Black Tie White Noise, which was meant too have a couple of extra bonus tracks (so I've heard - and I don't mean Lucy Can't Dance and the JTS remix). Still we also miss out on a lot of stuff as well. I just thought that occasionally you get some nut posting here they have got every official Bowie release, and I know that they haven't.

Hi Matt. I read with interest your comments on the whole question of different releases in Australia. I didn't realise it went back as far as you say. I knew the US version was substantially different from the UK version (of the Singles thingy), but I didn't know about the Australian one. I've been vaguely aware over the years that strange things happen in Oz (you hear about so many "Australia only" releases). I think the record companies exploit the collector's market a bit by releasing so many different copies of this and that. You have my deepest sympathy.

Dara, I read your comment on the message board about Bowie releases being divided into three areas, Europe, Japan/Australasia and the rest of the world. I agree, but I don't think this is a new thing. Of course the most recent example is the Hallo Spaceboy single, and Outside Version 2 following that, but go back a few years to The Singles Collection/Singles 69-93. I know this is not quite the same as this is involved with the bcak catalogue, but I wonder if you know that The Singles 69-93 is really quite different to The Singles Collection (which incidently was released in two volumes downunder). I don't just mean the track listing differences either. The Oz version was more of a best of, because the tracks featured were all the full length versions, with the exception of Under Pressure, Day In, Day Out, and Absolute Beginners. The U.S. version contain attenuated supposedly "singles" version such as the 3 and a half minute version of Space Oddity. But going back even further, to when vinyl was still king. I have Bowie albums with titles like Chameleon, Golden Years, Best of Bowie, Fame to Fashion, The Gopsel According to David Bowie, Rock Reflections, Another Face/Second Face etc, and not one of these are bottlegs. But you won't find a lot of these in the Discographies. I think you could go back even further to when the Beatles U.K.(I know this is getting off track here) albums were certainly not the same as there U.S. counterparts. It cerntainly makes it extremely difficult for collectors to have complete collections.

DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia (CNN) -- A suspicious truck was seen in the area of a bombed American military complex near Dhahran about two weeks before the deadly attack, U.S. Air Force officials have disclosed. Military sources say a Saudi woman reported the incident to her husband, who then told Saudi police and provided the truck's license plate number. But U.S. security officials in Saudi Arabia did not learn of the incident until after last week's bombing of the Al-Khobar apartment complex that killed 19 U.S. servicemen and injured hundreds of others. The woman reportedly spotted the truck as it attempted to move to close to the complex. "It was reported to be a large, civilian-type vehicle," said Air Force Maj. Bob Dewald. The truck moved away after the woman challenged the driver, the sources said. Dewald appeared to cast doubt on the significance of the sighting. "It certainly was not a crucial security incident," he told reporters Monday.

Hello All! Having just finished my third time listening to Outside, I must say that it is growing on me. There are many snippets of it reminding me of other Bowie output, but can't put it together yet. Please, everyone, just imagine how we would feel if there were no David Bowie Guestbook! If the message signed Evan was or was not actually written by Evan, it most certainly could have been, and if it were my Guestbook, I would be considering taking it off the Net. So let's all be considerate of others when we post here. I don't believe that short personal messages are harmful to our site at all, but hundreds of them are most certainly painful to all but the writers. 'Nuff said! Denis, I would love to meet you at the chat site but have still been unable to get Netscape up and running on Patti's pc. Nice words for me, Tec. No information yet from Shakey is very disturbing. If anyone gets any information, please e-mail me at Patti's. Thanks.

Yesterday I got Sound Vision Japan '90 on vinyl. It's great! Ode to Joy is the intro as well. I also got Historia de la Musica (featuring DB of course). I've finally gotten to hear The Laughing Gnome. Boy, what a laugh I had! I really like Love You Till Tuesday, but The Prettiest Star still ranks as my favorite (only for the past week or so!) Strangers When We Meet is a close second. I really like the Outside version where he sings "black screen tv's, preening ourselves in the snow..." bye loves...

Review from The Outsise show at Loreley 22 June 96 (Broadcasted at 30 June 96 at the Rockpalast Nacht, German TV) Setlist: Look back in anger, Scary monsters, Diamond dogs, The hearts filthy lesson, Outside, Aladdin sane, Andy Warhol, The voyeur of utter destruction, The man who sold the world, Telling lies, Baby universal, Hello spaceboy, Breaking glass, We prick you, Jump they say, Lust for life, Under pressure, Heroes. Encores: White light white heat, Moonage daydream, All the young dudes. Outro: Ode to joy. The entire concerts was broadcasted with no interruptions. When I watched the show I thought some songs were played less powerfull than at the shows of late '95 and early '96. This holds esspecially for Outside. David introduces Diamond dogs as "now is a doggy song, second doggy song tonight" and starts with "this ain't rock and roll this is genocide". THFL is introduced as a song you may have heard in the film Seven and is from the Outside album. Aladdin sane is great, with great vocals from Gail Ann and execelent piano playing from Mike Garson. The song ends with parts from On broadway and Where have all the good times gone. I like the Tin Machine version of Baby universal much more than the one played here, it's too weak in my point of view. But ok, its nice to know that David didn't throw the Tin Machine stuff aside. Hello spaceboy is played with great power, I'm glad he didn't transform it into a Pet Shop Boys version but stayed more close to the original version. Breaking glass with lots of guitar noise from Reeves. We prick you is played very nice with lots of tipical hand movements (signals) by David. Jump the say is good, I like the guitar sound. David introduces Lust for life as "second time for this one tonight its one I wrote with Iggy Pop in 76 its called Lust for life" (Iggy played it earlier that night at the same festival). Band intro during the intro with some strange keyboard sounds. This version is quitte good with great keyboards. Heroes is great, I think it sounds a bit like the version as played at the Live Aid show in 85 (which I think is the best version he ever played). After Heroes the band leaves the stage for about 70 seconds and then return. The band is introduced again and then David announces White light, white heat as a Velvet Underground song. They start a powerfull version of the song with great guitar playing from Reeves in a Mick Ronson style. Moonage daydream is also very powerfull and then the show ends with a great version of All the young dudes. After the show lots of fire crackers and then the tape with the Ode to joy is started. The camera work of the show is OK, but sometimes from too far away. After the show an interview is shown which was recorded earlier that day. In the interview David is tells that the follow up of Outside will be recorded late September and October, but before that in late July he will record with the current band a "high energy" album. After that they discuss the setlist. The next part is about the collaboration with Iggy, the reporter wants to know why they don't perform on stage together. David tells that he didn't do very much stage performances with others at all. Except Mick,Tina, Marc Bolan and Bing. With Iggy he just never did it (and also not at this show). Then they discuss the work with Brian Eno and David tells that the rest of the Nathan Adler diary will be recorded by just himself and Brian Eno.

Hi all! Two more days, for the show, and for my birthday. To any of you interested in my last exam (I hope none) it went quite well. Freedom! So now I'm working. What's the point having free time, when you work? I can't wait for the show. Hope he'll sing Telling Lies. I really hope the single will be out on 15.7, it would be great. I'm going to the show site about 1:30 hour before the gates open. Do you think it's enough. I think there will be alot of people expacting hits, and then saying the show was bad, and it's a pitty David didn't play old songs. I feel like hitting them. Everyone shoud already know there will be mostly Outside, and some old, non-hit, stuff. Who cares. I much prefer Outside, then hearing Ziggy Stardust again, of Space Oddity. It's not that it's much better, but what's the point hearing a 20 year old song, when you can hear a brand new, good, one? I heard the original Under Preassure (In a db special on radio) and I think the live version from HS single is much better. Dancing In The Streets sucks! I'm gonna buy a lot of T-Shirts and have great time. I heard Aviv Gefen (A local singer) will be playing as db's warm-up in Eorupe. I'm not sure if it will be from the 5th, and Belgium, or later. I don't like Aviv much (Aviv means spring, but it's a common name), but he's not to bad. It's not like a trashy dance singer, or something. He didn't go to the army here (Everyone should go), and a lot of people disapprove with that. I don't really care. That's it (That was a long, although somewhat boring, post... sorry if I got you sleeping...)

It MAY have been Will, but if it was Evan, then I think he means it. It didn't sound like the sort of comment Will usually makes. See you in 3 months, Roger. Have a good summer! Hel
