Teenage Wildlife Guestbook July 2000

Thank you for visiting Teenage Wildlife. Here are some previous user's comments.

Geez, before I read (or started to read) that post below, I thought for a sec that we got Denis Collins back, but no such luck! :-) I was at the Fanmix tonight for about a half hour and had decent video, very little shutting down, only once that I remember, and clear audio. You should try it tomorrow night when Tony Visconti will be there. I saw in BowieNetChat that people were having a rough time getting in, but I went to the link at BowieNet and had no problem from there. Good luck tomorrow! I heard David say that he's going to do Contamination, think he said next year, so let's all start crossing our fingers now. However, he also said that his favorite movie of those he's starred in is Bladerunner. :-)

Just another reason why I love TW, no fancy graphics that take a freakin year to load. Thats one thing I dont like about bowienet, it bogs my old puter to hell. maybe that kind of crap wins awards but it sure doesnt do someone who uses a site for a practical informative purpose on a daily basis any good. tw has been here for me for a few years now and i love to visit and see whats happening. its chock full of great info too. its got everything and more. love on ya

Dear Evan, I'd like to join the others in the praise of your site. Ever since I went online, it's been a joy to wade through the extensive information you have here. It's an endless source of news, fun and trivia, and it's been my start page all this time, and still is. I don't have a clue how the site that won is, but it better be damned good to beat this one !! In our opinion you should have won, and all who was watching cheered on you during the web-cast. Keep up the fab work :)) Oh yeah, and that freakin' guy who presented the show should be shot, gutted and hung from a Rutland tree !(and I'm not just saying that...)

Dear Evan, in our minds you've been the best fan site on the internet since the day we first looked in to see what a Bowie site might be all about, and look what we found! Your site is and has always been the best I've visited! Ilsa. Side note: Whoever was responsible for hiring that unfunny comedian should be run off the face of the internet! He went back 30 years to get his crummy jokes, and they weren't funny then either!

Evan, not much to add to the statements below, so for once I'll just join the choir. I think it's been 5 years since I first started tuning into the site, and it's meant a great deal all this time, which probably suggests that some of us should get a life. ;) But no hurry. Keep up the great work!! Cheers, the Swedish chef ;)

If it were not for this site, I would never have seen Bowie live, met 100's of fans, or found the Bowieness within. Multiple cheers to Evan!!! xoxoxo, RaM

Writes Lawson of the Detroit Free Press, "I think, because Seger is the anti-Bowie, a roots rocker with less than zero interest in trends, bandwagons of rock critic approval." Lawson apparently can't think, because, when I was in Nashville last year, I was shocked to see Seger, no new songs in as long as anyone can remember, singing on TNN (we don't get it here on our cable system) singing some syrupy ballad with Martina McBride, evidently a hit because it was on a countdown show. Not only does Seger have a lot more than zero interest in trends, his bandwagon is something even less worthy (if possible) than rock crit approval, the smarmiest of adult contemporary country music. This is roots rock? No, this is desperation. Sure, Seger was fun when he covered Dave Edmunds. That was nearly 30 years ago. I won't begrudge him for coming up with a way to continue to make money. But I will begrudge a columnist who slams away at Bowie and Iggy without a clue. Sorry you didn't win Evan. Next year?

The NY Daily News had a silly Bowie-related item yesterday that doesn't appear to be on its site and isn't worth recounting, but it did go on to note what Bowie at doodled on the table at the Dandy Warhols show Thursday at the Bowery Ballroom. There is an MTV news item this morning confirming he was there, and the extensive interview with the Dandys' guys about Bowie's Glastonbury set is a fun read. Go to the news page at www.mtv.com.

Bowie's whole career has been about hyper-text. He utilizes the incidental, the contingent to his advantage. Originally he wanted the Lodger album to be called "Planned Accidents." Bowie's re-emergence in the 90"s thrives on "turning points." On the web, a world of hyper-textual emergencies, Bowie can re-claim his postures, his positions, endlessly. Being everywhere at once, dis-located and re-located, Bowie's planned accidents, and other contaminations proliferate... "In the event that this fantastic voyage should turn to erosion and we never get old..." David Bowie will never get old!

The online DB community is hardly abuzz over the new online downloads. Rightly so. A comment titled "Buyer Beware," in today's WSJ says that EMI's program, covering more than 100 albums including a few familiar around these parts, "misses the point entirely. Consumers are tired of being gouged. That's why they looked to Napster in the first place." It concludes "EMI and their big-label brethren do need to join the revolution. But they need to jump in hip deep and offer their products for less money--and they can afford to, since they'll have no added marketing or manufacturing costs. Call it Economics 101." Along those same lines, in an interview in Sunday's LA Times, Interscope/farmclub.com founder and former engineer Jimmy Iovine says that the music industry is slower to change than the Catholic Church, and decries its feeble efforts to find new pricing models. Can you find anyone that disagrees?

It's a lot of fun to go to Billboard's site at www.billboard.com and look at the trade journal's perceptions and advice to retailers on the release of certain favorite albums. In other words, if you put in DB's name, you'll get Billboard's reaction to his entire catalog. In retrospect, a lot of this material is really quaint. The evaluation for the Bowie event of the week ending Jan. 31, 1976, is particularly relevant after the recent shows, and is particularly amusing: "Another good disco effort from Bowie, who seems to have found his musical niche following the success of "Fame" and now "Golden Years." Strong vocals and excellent production from the artist and Harry Maslin are the keys to the set. The lyrics don't seem to mean a great deal, and the 10 minute title cut drags. But as a disco dance album, few faults can be found. Earl Slick's guitars are superb throughout as he leads the instrumental charge. Bass and drums are typical disco. The material may not be as powerful as was the early Bowie, but the LP is indeed filled with infectious, quite commercial material that, in its way, is every bit as alive as anything Bowie has done. Certainly enough of the old Bowie here for the veteran fans and enough disco to attract a new group. On the whole, a successful venture. Best cuts: "Golden Years," "Station To Station" (particularly the last half), "TVC 15." Dealers: Artist set for first tour in two years in next month." On the whole, I'd agree that StS was "a successful venture," wouldn't you? After all, it had a sufficient amount of disco.

The Concept of Contamination as Contiguity can be found in the song "The Motel." Bowie sings, "there is no hell." Again when the Blanks and the Stones become continuous/simultaneous with each other, when "they are finally all the same," exchangeable, interchangeable, then they are no breaks, no interruptions, no spaces between. "If there was only something between us," some "fantastic death abyss" to mark our yearning, our hunger, the void, the absence. Bowie suggests that continual contact is a particular kind of contact. In the linear notes on Buddha, Bowie alluding to this mono-culture. Dis-solution in the Void becomes the only re-solution, when Contact itself creates such "Hollow Men." This continuous contact human beings have with each other could not be anymore obvious in the age of the Inter-Net. With the Inter-Net, there are never any Inter-ruptions. What is Outside becomes what is Inside and vice versa--leaving no spaces for mutation. Contact is a contaminating force-"danced with you too long!"

It may be coincidental, but there quite a few what-could-be-interpreted-as-Bowie-references in Wobbie Williams' (appalling) new single. For starters, it's called "Rock DJ". The lyrics include the line "Can you hear me Ground Control" and also a reference to Backstage Passes.

Bew--I agree--The album Contamination is not relevant. The concept Contamination is however. Bowie has been exploring the theme of Contact/Contamination or Affection/Infection since he wrote the song "She Shook Me Cold." A/MOR--translates Deathless or Love. Desire and Death are both transitional transmissions or contaminations. Bowie plays the very devil wrong because he is a master of the "Ambigul." He miscegnates/adulterates everything he touches--knowing LOVE is both the Sweetest Joy and the Wildest Woe. Remember Venus is a Venerable Venom whose Beauty lulls us into TIME, the Great Reaper! Bowie captures this well in "Dreaming My Life." It's the ever-present theme of Contamination in Bowie's work that is spell-binding. I think it was intentional that he kept the Concept out there...It's all about Hybrids. And the Image of the Minotaur represents the same Ambigul--a miscegenation of Desire and Death, the essential contamination from which we are never free... "Bye Bye Love--this Chaos is killing me."

I do not really understand this...this Bowie obsession but I think I like it. I would really like to type something meaningful and heartfelt but lets face it its David Bowie. I don't mean to upset any hardcore Bowie fans but what the hell is wrong with you anyway? All and all I think he is a great singer and a good actor, when he has clothes on. You guys do know how I like to kid, don't you?

One welcome side effect (here in Dublin at least) of Bowie reviving Absolute Beginners at Glastonbury is that having gone ages without hearing it on the radio here, I've now heard it twice in the past two days. I'd almost forgotten what a great song it is.

The Bowie-Visconti album is something to look forward to. But for me, Contamination is in the "who cares?" files. It's been way too long since Outside, and whatever was there is gone, gone, gone.

Contamination--Contagion: Transition/Transmission. Contingency: Something In the Air/As the Wind Blows. The Bowie and Visconti album. The sixties remakes... 2. Contamination is what I really want... But then again Bowie and Visconti--You can't go wrong!

I know a lot of people are wondering if Bowie will ever do the long delayed Contamination 2 album. I asked him about this on the Top 10 Naggers Post on BNet, and he replied that he is planning to get back to that after the Visconti collaberations and the 60's album. Seems it's not forgotten, but I guess we have to wait a while longer...

Has he really given up smoking? If laryngitis & bronchitis are the result -perhaps he should take it up again! ;-) (Personally I think smoking is disgusting but everyone is entitled to their own vices)
