Teenage Wildlife Guestbook August 2000

Thank you for visiting Teenage Wildlife. Here are some previous user's comments.

Since I posted the alert, I'll post the caveat: VH-1's listing at the Web site doesn't match the press release. So we know the Bowie stuff is coming up, but we're not sure if it is going to appear tomorrow as the VH-1 press release indicated. And speaking of the Bottom Line, there will be plenty of Bowie content there again on Friday, Sept. 22 for Vol. 8 of the "Beat Goes On" series. The theme this time is "Singers, Swingers & Crooners," and announced performers so far include Holly Palmer, Tony Visconti, Ricky Byrd, Phoebe Snow and Pierce Turner; more will be added. The host is another name that may be familiar, Richard Barone. Two shows, $20 admission. E-mail reservations at www.bottomlinecabaret.com.

There's a Bowie-oriented segment premiering Friday on VH-1's new Sound Effects show, which will be repeated during the course of the following week. I haven't seen it yet, but I bet it's going to make for some interesting Conversation Piece conversation pieces.

Not to be too compulsive, but is today the anniversary of Ziggy's Carnegie Hall appearance? Mitchell Fink says that it is, in his NY Daily News column this morning at http://www.nydailynews.com/today/News_and_Views/Daily_Dish/a-77993.asp. As does the TW tour page. But 5years.com if I'm reading it correctly says the concert took place Sept. 28, 1972. I also thought it was a fall thing, not a summer thing. Speaking of curious NYC doings, there is a startlingly large black-and-white glossy photograph headshot of Bowie circa Earthling, unpublished that I know of, taking up the entire window of a small photography store on Ave. B at 10th St., across from the park. Has anybody stopped in and asked why?

Bowie is featured prominently on the cover of the new People, along with his wife and other very important celebs. Celebrity babies is the theme. Bowie and Iman lead the web coverage, here: http://people.aol.com/people/index.html

An update on the DeeBee Cover Project: Due to popular demand, BowieNet is going to change their presentation of the project to a streaming format and will offer all the songs, not just a top ten selection. I think they deserve a lot of credit for listening to their members and instituting the requested changes. I am planning to leave the stream up at my site for those of you who are not BowieNet members and who would still like to hear the songs. Enjoy!

Hi Spidey - due to *ahem* "legacy issues", the email system uses a separate username/password combo than the rest of the site. To complicate matters a little more, when I created the message board I decided to let people use the "nickname" from their registry entry to log in rather than their original login name - the reason being that people's original login names are not always what they want to be known as for the rest of their time at TW. However, for everything other than the message board (i.e. whenever it pops up a window asking you to log in), you need to use your original login name that you chose when you first registered with Teenage Wildlife. In your case, it's datkins, not Spidey. The password should be the same as you use for the message board.

I don't know if any of you recall that I organized a DeeBee Cover Song Project a while back. Bowie fans submitted their own cover versions of Bowie songs. BowieNet has finally posted a version of the project at their Mutations Section (on the BN HomePage) for those of your who are members. Frankly, they screwed it up. They chose a Top Ten, then randomly posted only some of the remaining submissions, and they are having people listen by downloading huge MP3 files. Therefore, I have resumed a ShoutCast streaming audio broadcast of all the songs at my own homepage for those of you who are not BowieNet members, or for anyone who would like to hear all the submitted tracks in a more user-friendly format. You can vote for your favorite tracks in the following categories: Best Overall Cover; Best Bowie Clone; Most Original Cover. Just email me!!

I found this great site--Andrew Broad's Website. www.cs.man.ac.uk/~broada/bowie/contamination According to him, the contamination lyrics were posted by Tommy Lowe on the Repetition Message board. I read the lyrical excerpts supposedly written by Bowie. They were quite interesting. Anyway I'm passing the info onto my friends at TW. Take Care, All.

Any registered TWer can sign a congratulations card for David and Iman's new baby by visiting Alexandria's Baby Page and clicking on the stork. We'll collate wishes for the next week or so and then package all of the files up into a single archive to send to David and Iman as a memento of Alexandria's birth from Teenage Wildlife.

Advanced age has slowed down my cognitive functions a helluva lot, but thanks for the b-day greetings Alys and patti (I think I've just about recovered from it). Actually yesterday was the first time in a while that I've checked TW...was wondering whether Iman had delivered the goods and lo and behold there's the news that Alexandria made it out fine and dandy...must've been kismet. Bowie seems to be getting bigger in Australia. I was at this place called Fox Studios on friday, and a band called Platinum Grit were playing some of Bowie's music (Heroes, Space Odity, Hallo Spaceboy). They were pretty good. If any of you are after a band (in the sydney area), I suggest you give them a try. www.platinumgrit.i-p.com is their url.

The screaming males once again try to make their mark. All the president's men are mere husks of the now formadable female power. The last gasps of a dying gender, a talking man, who spoke of the many powers he had.We let him use his powers. We let him fill our needs. Now we are strong. Our breasts will support our children, our breasts will uphold the law.The sword of retribution is needed no more when the males have withered away. The scales of justice will be balanced by our breasts. It will be women who visit Mars, they will be the life on there, confident as the low gravity causes their breasts to rise and take their place amongst the other constellations.

canadian boy -- if we had DB for PM of Canada... well, almost anyone (I do say ALMOST, here) would be better than ANY of the particular political candidates at present! and Jeaj, I do figure that Scotland would be independent by then, but maybe you could personally convince DB that since his name is Scottish, therefore England should be sending their taxes to Edinburgh instead of what the Scots have had to do sending to Westminster! ;)

Bowie is going to be the next President of RamseyLand. In my country we don't have these silly rules about where were you born, or whether can you spout off complicated economics formulas. Hell no!! And dearest Tura, while I appreciate your vote of confidence, President is pretty much last on my list of life ambitions! I'm afraid I don't have the moral turpitude for the job :-). Bowie can never be US president under current law. You have to be born on US soil to campaign for that office. As you can guess, I read through your summary Ramsey :-) Interesting to see that "investing these (Soc.Sec.) funds in the stock market is an incredibly stupid idea, as any child could tell you". I'd be surprised if the majority of the US adult population could explain what compound interest and future value are, yet alone give formulae for them, so I'd be even more suprised if most adults, yet alone children, could give a rational explanation for why investing in the stock market is an incredibly stupid idea.

It is important to keep in mind that America is heading toward a critical turning point parallel to the American Revolution, Civil War, and Great Depression. From 2000-2020, the country will become ultra-conservative, anti-immigrant, paranoid, and desperate. Cyber-terrorism and bio-terrorism will become common place. All the polished, polite politicians will be hopelessly trying to assert their manhood in the face of war... Same old same old. Play me "Saviour Machine." God, how I love that song!

Personally? I think that any person who says any politician is "in touch" with anything is either a rube or a bald faced liar. I think there is a total lack of faith in American Politics that goes way beyond a mistrust of how the government works. When I was a kid, someone would ask a boy (this was when you didn't ask a girl such a question) "What do you want to be when you grow up, Billy?" And Billy would answer, "President!" Nowadays kids want to be basketball stars or rap singers. Who wants to be president(or vice-prez for that matter!)? No one but the crooks, cheats, fat cats and liars... Aren't you glad you asked? LOL.

Flattery will get you everywhere, though I'm not really qualified. Thanks for the kind words. I thought the Rock's pitch to bring in new voters was well done. It remains to be seen whether it will be effective. Surely it can't hurt. The WWF plans to put up voter registration tables at live shows. It makes sense. Then again, for some Bowie content, the people manning the Lifebeat table at Roseland weren't exactly under siege. I don't think there is any question that the Rock's braying last night, however idiotic, was a lot more motivating than Cheney's, uh, braying. What did you think of Cheney's speech?

Kel, I'm sure that the wrestling shows did better ratings-wise than the convention did on Monday night. The fact that the Republicans asked the Rock to actually speak tonight from the podium may be proof where people's interests lie. You raise an excellent point: On reflection, yeah, I'd rather hear from the Rock than Cheney anyway. But of course, the Rock isn't a real person. He's a character. So's everyone on this board, some of whom have cooler nicknames and better gimmicks and likely would make better VP candidates than Cheney, and a better introductory speakers than the Rock. ;-)

Leave it to Patti to add a dose of reality to these proceedings. On all of Bowienet's many discussion forums, there is plenty of stuff about the problems people had with the Fanmix on Monday (it worked like a charm for me), the Visconti chat last night (for some reason, I kept getting bounced and gave up), even Monday night's WWF card, but nothing about democracy-in-action in Philly. It's as surreal a community in that respect as the Republicans in the First Union Center are. Then again, perhaps it's an accurate reflection of what the nation as a whole thinks. There seems to be little interest. Not surprising that Bowienet would schedule big events for the first two nights, since no one was paying attention anyway. For the record, I had the TV on the whole time the past two nights, and I still can't believe what political ideas have been reduced to. Ricky Schroeder last night? The Rock--a professional wrestler, not a retired one like Ventura but an active real one, to the extent they're real people--tonight? I mean, Dick Cheney? Patti: Pacifica radio (and picked up on many cable TV access channels) has done a great job covering the protests. No one else has come close. It streams was www.wbai.org, among other places.

TW not winning the Yahoo award tells us something about the quality (or lack thereof) of the awards (selection procedure), but not TW, which is still the best. Bowie was mentioned on radio as I went to work this morning (it was in conjunction with the Napster story, with Bowie included along with Blur and Courtney Love as pro-Napster). They also played "Seven", which does sound good on radio.
