Teenage Wildlife Guestbook August 2001

Thank you for visiting Teenage Wildlife. Here are some previous user's comments.

Bowie has gone and left us, alone- to our own devices, now we just bump into the wall of the guestbook going yaka te yak.The sync pulses are missing and so the picture continues to roll, will we ever see the vision again?

It won't be there for long, but right now Bowie's Puffy work is a featured story on Drudge's page, www.drudgereport.com.

If ELO had played small clubs, like the ELO II (or whatever they were called a couple years ago), you would have been able to go see them. That was the problem. :-) They thought they were the Who or something.

Rancell, thanks for clarifying. My husband wanted to get tickets to ELO, but only if they played in NYC. I was quite surprised when I heard they were playing at arena's. We were hoping they would play the small NYC clubs. Maybe next time!

Also, back on topic, almost, I got in the mail a brochure solicitation for a screenwriting seminar. Among others in his list of 19 former students, right on the front of the thing next to my address, is Bowie's name, right between Kirk Douglas (!!!) and Zak Penn (???), well down the list from Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan. Here's the seminar guy's page if you too want to be whatever he's selling: http://www.mckeestory.com/homepage.htm.

ELO booked a reunion tour, this time with Jeff Lynne, into big venues with high prices. In our area, Lady, at Nassau and CAA. The band's management said it wanted to do a big show, the spaceship, the props, the whole deal. Sales sucked; at CAA, prime orchestra seats were available for at least a couple of weeks after the on sale. The entire tour was canceled. If you do a news search, both generally and on music sites, you'll see stuff on it. Clarification on what's below: only the set-aside, up-close tickets would be and have been TM phones only. You can still buy all other seats via the phones, TM online, and, as TM usually says, "select" outlets. These presales, at least for venues in and around NYC, almost every time is a waste of time, and the will call method is the only thing that beats the scalpers.

And speaking of Dylan and presales, TM's management of the www.bobdylan.com password sale was a typical TM online fiasco. The password was not enabled for nearly an hour. When it finally came up, 19K plus seats for the NYC show, and from what I heard and read, they all sucked. Well, not all, because I lucked out with a great pair, justifying the time wasted. ;-) So I guess it can work. Memo to Bowie for the eventual tour: Puh--leeze forego all this consumer time-wasting presale stuff, and make it TM phones only, setting aside the first XX rows (depending on the size of the venue) in pairs, which can only be picked up at will call by the caller with ID, limit one pair per person per stand. That way everyone who needs to gets up close will get a chance, and most important the scalpers and the industry buddies are banished from the best seats. While there's always a chance they're totally clueless, Bowie and his management damn well know that this exact process has been done in the U.S., and done effectively--and it isn't the venue's call, or TM's call, or the promoter's call. It is done by venue/TM/promoter because the artist insists. But only if the artist cares enough to ask. Not nearly enough of them do. Of course, if the next tour also is downsized again to Electric Factory/Roseland, well, never mind. After all, no way Bowie is going to get caught in an ELO-style disaster.

In today's Daily News, Mitchell Fink notes that the lineup still may change for this Lennon tribute. There's a story to be told here, but I guess this is too top secret for us peons to hear/read. In fact, Dave Stewart's house band is stocked with Dylan band members. The Internet presale is on thru 9pm, the initial tickets as expected were horrendous and benefit-expensive, and I passed. Surprisingly, about an hour ago, I checked, and a pair popped up in Row G way over on the side, which isn't as good as it sounds, but perfectly acceptable. But at $400 face plus another approximately $35-40 in TM fees, I passed for now.

"NEXT!" Bowie shouts,( scrunching through yet another bunch of grapes) as once again someone is summoned to his presence amongst the pillars of his abode. This time a small rickety old Cockney man bows, removes his teeth and starts thrashing a bunch of spoons on his knee, doing his best to tingle Bowie's nostalga nerve with his whistling rendition of Gus Elen's "half a pint of ale". Like the internet before, Bowie is slightly moved, but until the laurel on his crown begins to itch, the toga gets too windy and all the grapes pips start irritating his private parts, Bowie will not think of us too much.

I would presume that Bowie has now got bored with the web and probably does not open his little IMac on anymore?, prefering to sit amongst bunches of grapes in a roman tonga shouting "next" as feverish Irish Step dancers try to amuse him by banging about on the floor. In reality of course we know he has nipped off to his home planet to pick up some more 'flem jelly' which enables him to breath the earth's atomosphere

According to VH-1, Bowie wrote or contributed to the liner notes of the new Stevie Ray Vaughn collection coming out Nov. 6. The package consists of live performances at Montreux in 1985 and 1982, where Bowie saw Vaughn and was inspired to invite him to appear on "Let's Dance."

On the Lennon tribute, Rolling Stone is saying Nelly Furtado added to the group below, another Internet outlet says the Stone Temple Pilots. No press release as of 3pm so nothing official. The only for sure I know of is Marc Anthony, and I'll take Shelby Lynne at face value. But if this one hasn't leaked by now, well, that's a bad sign.

The covers played on the show were Gaines/Ricky Lee Jones/Natalie Merchant, all not unpredictable. BUT: it ended with a real extreme obscurity--Happy Rhodes, an indie folkie who did a very stripped down, extremely weirdly sung version of "Ashes to Ashes." Of course we all knew she sang "Life on Mars" about a decade ago, but we didn't know she did A-to-A. Another hole in the colllection. :-) Sort of proving my point, the DJ said that next month, they'll do an Under the Covers devoted to Bowie covering other artists, spotlighting, or maybe exclusively coming from, Pinups. Date TBA on the Web site. Happy Rhodes!!

NYC's NPR/Americana outlet WFUV (90.7 Fordham University in da Bronx, and streaming at www.wfuv.org) plays an "Under the Covers" set most days after the noon news, and today Bowie is the subject, artists who've covered Bowie. When they've done it in the past, they've pulled out some really unusual stuff, including Jeffrey Gaines terrific version of Win. Worth listening to if you can. The station is very interesting: an extremely restrictive format of often-interesting music ... with a heavy dose of similar sounding folk music in between. The weekday, all day (literally 6am to 1am) programming, in fact, is called City Folk. And somehow, this station has become one of the best outlets Bowie has ever had in NYC. Classics continually--granted, only the HD/Ziggy types that fit the format--and in the evenings, they're actually still playing "....hours" songs. Sure beats "Space Oddity" on classic rock.....

Billboard has details on the Lennon tribute this morning. It's not complete. The item says a “TNT spokesperson confirmed details of the event, but would not comment on the show's talent lineup. An official announcement is expected next week.” Thanks, guys. Let's see if they can get it out, completely, before the on-sale. Here’s the lead from the Billboard item: “Marc Anthony and Beck lead the list of artists who will celebrate the music of John Lennon during a TNT taping Sept. 20 at New York's historic Radio City Music Hall. 'Come Together: A Night for John Lennon' will be led by musical director Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, and also will feature Moby and Nelly Furtado, according to a source, with additional artists expected. An edited version of the show is scheduled to air Oct. 9 on TNT.” We know there has to be more, because Shelby Lynne has already confirmed her appearance. And what’s good for Shelby is good for, well, who knows? Probably Aerosmith. :-) We'll see. Anyway, if you’re still interested, it’s gonna be steep, $53.50 to $203.50. On sale Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. via TM BUT: Radio City does Internet presales, and while the seats for the presales so far have been awful, for this concert, every little bit helps. The presale begins at 9am on 8/29. Sign up at for Backstage Access at www.radiocity.com. Billboard doesn’t say it, but so far as I know this is still supposed to be a benefit for the Violency Policy Center, a Washington gun control group, which in part explains the prices. See http://www.vpc.org.

The NY Times Style section item yesterday stuck me as repugnant. But I guess some fans really liked it. The piece noted how some designers and retailers have "discovered" Ziggy music--nothing ever gets past the fashion crowd--and are using it on their runways and in stores to sell their leopard prints and the like. The item, with a color Ziggy photo, actually worried that Ziggy will be burnt out from all the sales use by the time the actual anniversary rolls around. That may be a reason to celebrate. At least this stuff wasn't Bowie's fault, at least not apparently. But that combined with another unfortunate Page Six dinner sighting, on a weekend when Bruce, Patti, and David Johansen were all out and performing in the open air in the metropolitan area, working out new and recent material and thrilling everyone lucky enough to have taken part in watching artists push themselves without regard to their commerce, was a juxtaposition that really makes me kinda sad. And that, of course, is the very definition of petty nonsense about my life. Not Bowie's. ;-)

Dear Chinchilla - I wouldn't worry too much about the state of the guestbook. If you look back in the archives, there's always been all sorts of posts on it, even strange silly little ones that others don't always understand. And besides, when the guestbook becomes too large of a file, it is automatically archived. Enjoy. :)

Dear Liz You are in the minority and the state of this guestbook can be reflected by the relatively few people who regularly post here. The ones who make an effort to post decent material like Rancell very seldom divulge petty nonsense about their lives on here and behave exactly the opposite to what the Webmaster intended of the guestbook users. Once again please refer to the disclaimer up the top. I shall now leave you to your little clique of people.

Hey, all --

I know I haven't been around much lately, but here's why -- I gave birth to a beautiful BABY BOY last week!

Bryn Daniel Evans was born at 8:29pm on August 3rd. Weighed in like a champ at 7lb., 9oz. His dad and I are totally in love with him!

I can very selfishly say, I'm glad David didn't do any shows this summer....it would have been tough!!

I must say that David probably made a couple of his worst albums when he was 70, but they certainly had a few good tunes on that made up for rest.Who could forget the song and vid for NLMD. this was a song devoted to his loyal servant OKE OKE COCCO the COCOA KID, who steered him throught the pains of retirement. Thank goodness that now he is in his eighties and nearly my age, that he is still able to wack that old stick from under my legs and give us all a good beating.

Will David be still making albums when he is 70 or does everyone think he will take an early retirement. I would like to think he will still be making music then and gain the respect he deserves. I have been working in a office for a year and a half and have found it very boring, so I've quit and got a job on a cruise ship sailing from Miami. Are there any Bowie fans willing to give me a sight seeing tour of Miami when I come over to do my five day training ??? bye for now Nick S.

Radio City Music Hall confirmed the Lennon tribute for 9/20, and it said it will have the lineup when it makes an official announcement about the ticket onsale date. Meaning, of course, that nothing is official until there is an official announcement. Shelby Lynne--again--officially announced that she officially confirmed, and that she's doing "Mother" ... perhaps as a duet. Interesting, but nah, no way. ... ;-) Aerosmith is in town that evening, playing at the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Yahoo Life Internet music awards, which Bowie did last year. They, and whoever else is appearing at Yahoo Life, could easily do both shows. I'll endorse the criticism that this may all be much ado about a TV show of little interest. But I think it will be more than that. ... :-)

Bowie's filmed COMMERCIAL for a subscription satellite radio network begins running today in theaters all over the U.S. According to the release, he is featured with BB King and Snoop Dogg. I believe they're all in the 60 second spot. There's also a bunch of genre specific spots, and apparently he's in one or more of them too. I kind of figured this would be a more visible and active second half, but who knew that it would manifest itself this way? Coming to a theater near you. ...

This news about Bowie signing to Top Dog Films actually is more than a month old. Top Dog, a new company, announced that it had signed Bowie in June. This is not a representation or management deal per se. It is a contract for Bowie to direct commercials and music videos. Short-form stuff only, no features, at least not now. Does this mean that, say, Ford can march in with a truckload of green and ask for Bowie to direct its spots? And Top Dog can assign Bowie, of course with all of the essential caveats by the budding Eisenstein about having full artistic control over the advertisement, sponsor be damned? Well, he sure keeps busy. Directing commercials. He may wind up with more Ad Age awards than Grammys, and, somehow, somewhere, it would come out as an in-your-face, "F" the system, posture. I don't get it.

Interesting comments about Roxy Music, was just talking to patti about this. In Philly I'd say we got over 2 hours. They played a few songs I didn't know too well. Didn't do More Than This, which OK, is a popular song, but I would have liked to hear it! Byran Ferry looked grerat, sounded great. Agree with you all, they need to do a NEW album.

Mitchell Fink, who has written about this before, confirms in today's NY Daily News that the Lennon tribute show will be taped Sept. 20. He writes that they're still negotiating for performers, and Yoko's spokesman "said the intention is to round up 'the newer and younger artists who can best contemporize John's music.'" Just after Fink writes that he's heard that Aerosmith will be among the acts. Radio City has no on sale date yet. It will be interesting to see if they put them up without announcing the lineup.

I guess the Rock n' Roll issue is going to be an annual thing at Vanity Fair. Guess who will be on the cover? This is the next-to-last paragraph from Michael Musto's column in the Aug. 7 Village Voice, available in full at www.villagevoice.com: "And don't slap me for revealing who'll be on the cover of the Vanity Fair 'Rock and Roll' issue: Jewel, Beck, Beyoncé, Maxwell, Bowie, and even some people with two names—like Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell, who I hear joined for some impromptu scatting after the photo session."
