Bowie is artist of the day today at www.billboard.com. There's a pretty interesting story you can access directly at http://www.billboard.com/billboard/feature/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1503560. It emphasizes the lack of emphasis on the commercial aspects, but the supposed strong pre-release buzz and prospects. It even has someone from WRNR in Annapolis saying the album is gonna get loved. Not hearing it anywhere in NYC yet, save the Screening Room and the retail listening post, but then again, we don't have a station that good here. Alys, DJ Shadow is doing a Virgin promotion Tuesday, which requires lining up and buying at 9am Monday to get a voucher for the next-day, release day signing. If it's something like that, it may be a toughie. Gotta work occasionally. :-)

You know, Alys, you might have to pre-buy to get a place on line to get signed. I think they did this with Moby a couple of weeks ago, and with, for example, Nine Inch Nails in January. So walking up with the TW shirt, while a hoot, would violate the rules, you know, only pre-purchased overpriced official new release CDs get signed. I wonder if the downstairs bookstore still sells the Angie book. ;-)

Rancell, what time do you think he'll start signing? I would debate being there, although meeting Bowie isn't one of my biggest priorities... (don't be shocked! lol)... a sig on the new Heathen album would rock, or perhaps my old TW shirt. :)

Pardon the dropped word(s). I forgot to note that I’d take it all back if the signing/appearance turned out to be at midnight Monday night, the night before the show. That could be cool. But it’s not going to be like that. As of right now, Virgin-–a co-sponsor, BTW, of tonight’s listening party, check your laminate–-says it is mulling/awaiting word on whether you will need to pre-order to get a signature, get a ticket beforehand, or what. That’s how Bowie will limit the number of signings. Blech. Just do it later in the week, getting the appearance in during the obviously crucial first-week sales. Why not walk over from Rockefeller Plaza Friday, fans in tow, and stay for a while? :-)

A big pet peeve is people jumping the gun and slamming the artist for things out of his control or not yet announced or unheard. That said, if the June 11 Times Square Virgin Megastore signing comes off as is now tentatively planned, it would really say all you need to know about the physicality of the show that evening. Nothing against promotion. But it’s all about the music, allegedly, and scheduling a signing on the day-of-show just because it’s the day of release exhibits a kind of imperial rock star commitment to what’s going on that night at Roseland. And that’s a real bad thing. Ironically, the idea of being as good as possible at every possible live event gets turned on its head by doing this: While a nearly three-hour Earthling style show is out of the question after an afternoon of signing and gladhanding, it’s even worse from the promotion perspective, where the artist, who should sign until the store is vacant, will obviously have to limit the line, and the timing, and speed off in the limo while interested customers, excuse me, fans, stand on line with no signatures on their CDs. You know that the hardcore who have traveled from God knows where who will miss this because they’re waiting on line seven blocks up town will be pissed. This is a long way of saying that a day-of-concert CD signing is a crock. It not at all hard to imagine what the band members really think of this.

Thanks for the reading tip rancell! (Can't say I've ever read EW before, except maybe in the doctor's office....) For my own bit of news, I woke up to the radio this morning to hear them talking about Paul McCartney's new art exhibition. 70 of his paintings from 1987-2001 on display in London (I think?). Anyway, according to the radio, one of them is called "Bowie Spewing"... a painting of DB puking. Strange, hmmm? I wonder what it looks like.

Before coffee, at 7:15 am, seeing Bowie on the cover of the new Entertainment Weekly in the window of the newstand on the corner this morning absolutely dropped my jaw. You can see it now at ew.com. Apparently, as is occasionally the case with the magazine, there are more than one cover. At least, the one pictured at the site is different than what I saw. Haven't had a chance to read it yet. Shocking and amazing! But I still have yet to hear one person say or post that they've heard Slowburn on commercial radio in the U.S. You've got your beach reading; have a great Memorial Day.

Now that the instant re-issue of the Pete Yorn album is out, with the added covers, he's doing China Girl every time out. For those very very few of you unable to see him at the Asbury Park music festival on Saturday, Yorn is a guest on the late night Carson Daly show next Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and, yes, he reportedly opted for China Girl during the taping over Bruce and Morrissey, so you'll have a chance to see it/hear it if you're so inclined to stay up late or tape.

A+E already has promised to give Bowie some tickets to the Live By Request show. But the question is whether there will be enough for him to give away after he's taken care of his own needs. We're talking a very small number overall, for everyone involved. If there is a Bowienet giveaway, it's not going to be the 40 pairs or so he was able to round up for giveaways when he announced his decision to do Battery Park after the initial free public distributions at Virgin Megastores. This surely will be far less than Storytellers, too.

Trying to be kinda inventive and less dependent, I just called up A+E and asked 'em for tickets to the 6/15 broadcast of the Live By Request show. No dice. Very nice guy in promotions explained to me that they're not going to give them or sell them to members of the general public. My explanation that I wasn't the general public didn't fly, not by a longshot. Good bullcrap detectors they have on over there. The PR guy did say, however, that the artist in question would be getting some tickets in all likelihood. Looks like another Bowienet contest is approaching. ...

Funny to find my mailing full of advertisements for muscles afterwards I wrote here last Saturday that I am a female creature... Other subject of fun : why Heike, from Neustadt, who likes TW web-site never signs on this nice open guestbook ? So glittering nicely in the skies of this spring 2002 that Heathen is going to be on sale.. So sunny and cool days these days in Paris... Hope is possible... and freedom of art, music or something else... and Beauty... Nevertheless, as promised nothing about Heathen but fan-friends of TW web-site, take care our dear David-Bowie, to avoid (in French) that notre chanteur "décadent" ne devienne jamais "décati"...Il n'y a pas trop de risques mais certaines personnes précieuses sont à ménager... I think "Afraid" is going to be in the setlist for as long as Bowie performs. Absolutely awesome full-band. Less a punk feel than a tuneful 70s rock guitar vibe in the live incarnation. Music that is totally out of style; I'm sure those of you over there will be screaming "rawk sucks" 'round these parts very soon. :-) I knew it had to be great when it appeared to lose the crowd. Bowie knew it, he sorta acknowledged it. So is this gonna be the "You'll recognize this next song" tour? Slick killed on Slowburn, which I also loved. Overall, the band sounded great, and made the acts I saw look like the warm ups they were (though Wyclef Jean got the biggest response by far). China Girl has gotta go. Leonard needs to be turned up. Those of you who hated the women backup singers last time will like Catharine much more. She's gonna be heard. She handles the vocals, and her percussion was great on LD. They're ready.

Why are these sad people blowing sunshine up david bowie's gender bender arse? Do they not realise that the prime reason why the youth of today are being seduced into lives of delinquincy and drug addiction and also perverse sexual preferency is because they are being lead astray by distorted neo-anarchic role models such as bowie - a bent menagerie of a man intent on perverted self expression and a pathologic desire to add to his sickening repertoire of past sexual deviancies marked by his attempts to be novel by actually indulging in a (normal) heterosexual relationship. And may I address the evidently homosexual person who decries Bowie's recent heterosexual detractions. I say to him:'If ever a man was bent from the true path, then it was, and still is, you sir'. Thankyou.

So now that all the heavy lifting is over, on a small portion of tonight’s questions. 1) How much if any of Bowie’s unpromoted appearance do we think will make it to TV? 2) The announced rock acts are fine, but mild. What will Bowie do to blow ‘em off the stage? 3) Will the crowd be surprised and excited, or will the new material make the crowd surprised and then baffled or bored? 4) How does he resist--a few steps from the WTC site and in need of something to connect to a national audience as well as the audience in front of him--doing “Heroes” again? 5) And avoid pandering if he does “Heroes”? 6) What will the old song(s) be? (Long unplayed YA likely would work with this older-than-the-standard MTV crowd, but LD has been used in radio spots for Area:2. And Space Oddity appears to be back.) 7) Will his overshadowing-of-the-headliners get overshadowed by the other unannounced guest stars? 8) We know that this TV taping will be a precise hit-the-mark timed show. But is there any chance at all that we’ll see him collaborate with others? (Jimmy Fallon’s imitation. :-) ) 9) Is it possible that it will not be a full band appearance? 10) Is this appearance what will get “Slowburn” played on MTV, a la “10 Spot”/IAOA? Because this seems incongruous to his age, his place in the U.S. music scene, and the sound of the new songs, IMHO it has the potentially to be something really interesting. In a sense, the pressure is on. Therefore, it’s almost guaranteed to be fun.

Moby announced today a fourth act for the main stage, the Blue Man Group. Ponchos for the first 10 rows?

That would be Virgin Megastores in Times and Union Squares, not Virgin Records.

An early NYC supporter of Bowie's in the 70s, Bruce Harris, a former A+R guy and a writer, among other things, reportedly died this weekend. I'd be interested to see if Bowie has any reminisces about the guy, who though he was nearby when it was happening, is more or less absent from the bios, at least as far as I can remember. This MTV announcement, after Virgin had doled out their ticket allotments on Friday, is causing a seizure or two of its own.

EVERYONE SAYS HI (Lyrics By David Bowie) Said you took a big trip They said you moved away Happened oh so quietly, they say Should've took a picture Something I could keep Buy a little frame, something cheap For you Everyone says hi Said you sailed a big ship Said you sailed away Didn't know the right thing to say I'd love to get a letter Like to know what's what Hope the weather's good and it's not too hot For you Everyone says hi Everyone says hi Everyone says don't stay in the sad place Where they don't care how you are Everyone says hi If the money is lousy You can always come home We can do all the old things We can do all the bad things If the food gets you livid You can always phone home We can do all the good things We could do, we could do, we could do it Don't stay in the bad place Where they don't care how you are Everyone says hi Everyone says hi Everyone says hi And the girl next door And the guy upstairs Everyone says hi And your mum and dad Everyone says hi And your big fat dog Everyone says hi

Well rancell, it is done. I bought a ticket for one of the Area:2 tour shows... a good seat, but rather more than I was expecting! I guess I am just too spoiled and should have gotten a seat at the back of Shoreline instead of the front section. *shrugs* But it should be worth it. I just wish the exchange rate to CAN$ wasn't so ugly. Now all I need to do is save up and make sure I can get myself a flight!

The MTV sale definitely put decent seats up, in fact, there are good ones still available here and there, indicating that demand ain't so overwhelming. But: the Amex presale snuck a couple of us into PNC before 10am, and those were best-in-house. I'd take Bowienet at face value that it will have good seats, the equivalents of MTV, because I'm sitting in the MTV seats too, and if they had sucked, I wouldn't have bothered. If I can upgrade the MTV seats via Bowienet, that'll be great. That said, this whole thing, all these sales at once, is headache-inducing.

PNC went on sale at 9am via phones and at the complex. Call the regular TM numbers. It is supposed to be Amex presale only ... but they may take others. Good luck.
