  David Bowie FAQ:Personal Life:
Birth
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones, on the 8th of January 1947 in Stanfield Road, Brixton, South London, England.

Family
David Bowie's father was John Jones (full name Haywood Stenton Jones), who died in 1969. His mother is Peggy Burns (full name Margaret), of Irish Catholic ancestry. Now over 80 years old, she reportedly lives in an exclusive 600-pound-a-week retirement home in England.

He had an older step brother, Terry via his mother's previous marriage, who suffered for many years from schizophrenia, and was in and out of mental institutions over the years. Terry committed suicide in 1985. Bowie did not attend the funeral, fearing his presence there would turn it into a media event.

He also has a step sister named Annette on his father's side. The family lost contact with Annette.

Bowie has been married two times. His first marriage was to Mary Angela ("Angie") Barnett in 1970. The couple separated and later divorced. He has one child, Duncan Zowie Heywood Bowie (who sometimes goes by the name of "Joe") born in 1971 by Angie.

He remarried supermodel Iman Abdulmajid (usually known just as "Iman") in 1992. The couple currently have no children.

Schooling
Having failed the 11-plus, Bowie studied art and graphic design in the Bromley Technical School. Traditionally, non-academic teenagers attended Technical Schools in England at this time. He left school in 1963 with just one O-level pass, in Art.
Owen Frampton was his Art teacher. Owen's son, Peter Frampton, who was studying in the same school, and is three years younger than David, was a member in the band that played behind him in the Glass Spider tour (1987). They used to sing Sons Of The Silent Age as a duet.

Stage Name
David Bowie was born as David Robert Jones, and still maintains that name for legal purposes. He changed his stage name to David Bowie in 1966 to avoid confusion with another famous Davy Jones (then enjoying success on the London stage and later as a member of the band The Monkees).

Reports say that he chose the name Bowie because he liked the name Mick Jagger and wanted a similar "cutting" name. He picked the Texan Jim Bowie (famous for the eponymous Bowie knife) because he wanted to have the name of an American, as he has always been fascinated by America.

Bowie pronounces his own name "bow-ee" (as in "bow" and arrow), not "boo-ee" (as the original American knife is pronounced), nor is it "bow-ee" as in a dog's "bow-wow-wow". However, Americans sometimes refer to him as "boo-ee" (which is the correct pronounciation of the original Scottish name, Bowie), and Londoners usually pronounce it "bow" as in "bow-wow-wow", and Bowie never corrects them.

Eyes
Bowie was born with blueish eyes. In 1962, he got into a fight with his longtime school friend George Underwood (over George's girlfriend), and a punch from Underwood damaged Bowie's left eye. His pupil was paralyzed, becoming unable to dilate or contract according to the ambient light.

As a result, Bowie's left eye now appears to be a different colour to his right eye, appearing either brown or green depending on the ambient light.

  David Bowie FAQ:Personal Life:
Height
According to most biographies, Bowie is listed as 5' 10", and this is apparently what it says on his passport.

  David Bowie FAQ:Personal Life:
Sexuality
Bowie has been married twice, both times to females :-) He has also fathered a son (see Family), Duncan.

Bowie has said in interviews that he wasn't bi-sexual, he was "try-sexual" ("I'd try anything"). Certainly it appears that he experimented with bi-sexuality, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s.

However, it seems that he is now and has always been primarily a heterosexual male.

  David Bowie FAQ:Personal Life:
Financial
Bowie's financial status is a question often shrouded in mystery.

While he was undoubtedly fleeced by managers early in his career, and may have indeed been almost bankrupt during portions of the early Diamond Dogs tour in 1974, he obviously learned from this experience, and decided to forgo the traditional outside management company. He instead formed his own management company, Isolar Enterprises (see Contact), in the 1980s. This arrangement has allowed him to gain much greater control over his music business.

Although Bowie nearly always refuses to comment on his financial affairs, in 1997, a British business magazine named him the world's richest musician, with an estimated worth of $US900 million (yes, 900 million dollars). If true, this fortune would certainly not be from just his musical releases (since Bowie has never sold in the same huge numbers as other popular artists like the Beatles), but is likely to include savvy financial investments which Bowie has made in fields other than just music.

George Tremlett's Bowie biography, published in 1995, examined Bowie's financial affairs in some detail and concluded that he was worth a lot more than people suspected (this was before the British business magazine survey). Tremlett suggested that the main source of Bowie's wealth was not his record sales (which don't match those of other legendary acts like the Beatles), but his earnings from three of his tours (Serious Moonlight, Glass Spider and Sound and Vision) which were three of the most successful tours commercially ever, coupled with publishing-related income (royalties from airplay, movies, licensing, commercials, other acts covering his songs etc.), all of which was skilfully invested so that his capital doubled every 5-7 years.
Bowie entered a financial transaction in 1997, which became known as the 'Bowie bonds'. The banker who organized the deal was David Pullman of The Pullman Group, a division of Fahnestock & Co.

This garnered much interest on Wall Street, as it was the first time a musician had undertaken such a deal, whereby royalties on an artist's back catalogue are used as 'asset backing' on an issued bond.

Prudential Securities bought all $US55 million of the securities on the day they were issued. In effect, Bowie received $US55 million up front, in return for agreeing to pay back the full amount (plus interest each year) at the end of the bonds' time period. The worth of Bowie's back catalogue was used as "collateral" in the sense that future royalties will go towards paying the interest (and guaranteeing the principal).
When the bonds expire (repaid in full), the royalty rights will revert to Bowie, and he'll be able to sell them all over again.

The same year, Bowie re-signed his back catalogue to EMI, and received an advance of $28.5 million.

Residences
Bowie is legally resident in Ireland (for tax purposes), where his principle residence is located. Irish tax law holds that musicians, artists and writers do not pay tax on royalty income generated from resale of their products. Bowie's Irish residence is a 640-acre estate located a short distance from Dublin. So far, he has spent little time at his Irish estate.
Bowie also maintains a home in Switzerland, and one in New York, and a holiday home in Bermuda. When not working, Bowie spends most of his time in Bermuda.

In May of 1998, Bowie put his Swiss mansion "Hauts de Lausanne" on the market, bringing to an end a 15 year association with Switzerland, reportedly because his wife Iman prefers city life to the bucolic existence of the Swiss countryside.
