"Heroes" (1977)
After playing the piano on Iggy Pop's 1977 tour, Bowie returned to Berlin to record "Heroes" with Eno and Visconti.
On the "Heroes" title track, Robert Fripp, the leader of King Crimson, appeared as a guest playing a clarion guitar.
The album included tributes to American performance artist Chris Burden (Joe The Lion) and Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider (V2-Schneider).
"Heroes" followed the same "side one pop - side two electronic instrumental" format as Low. By now, the critics had copped on that this new music Bowie was making was ground-breaking and important , and "Heroes" got a much easier ride from the critics, becoming one of the most acclaimed albums of 1977.
In the US, it continued Bowie's commercial decline, reaching only #35 on the chart (his worst peak position since Ziggy Stardust). It spent 19 weeks on the chart there. It fared much better in the UK, reaching #3 and spending 18 weeks on the chart.
In 1983, RCA re-released the album to cash in on the success of Let's Dance. The album spent eight weeks on the UK charts, peaking at #75. Ryko and EMI re-released the album on CD with bonus tracks in 1990. The EMI reissue spent two weeks on the UK charts (peaking at #39). A 1997 EMI mid-price CD reissue spent several more weeks on the UK charts, peaking at #74.
