Scary Monsters... And Super Creeps (1980)
Bowie's next album, Scary Monsters... And Super Creeps, was recorded with Tony Visconti (but not with Brian Eno). It is not regarded as one of Bowie's most influential albums.
The album was an enormous commercial success, particularly in Europe, restoring Bowie's commercial appeal which had slipped in the late 70s. The first single, "Ashes To Ashes" raced to #1 in the UK (becoming Bowie's second UK #1 hit), helped by a ground-breaking video, and the album went on to spawn three other UK Top 40 hit singles (Fashion made #5, the title track #20, and Up The Hill Backwards #32). The album also topped the charts in the UK, becoming Bowie's first #1 album there since Diamond Dogs.
In the US, the album also brought about a marked improvement in Bowie's commercial fortunes. Although it failed to produce a top 40 single (Fashion made #70), the album made it to #12 (the highest position for a Bowie album since Low) and spent 27 weeks on the charts (almost twice as long as Lodger managed).
Ryko and EMI reissued the album on CD with bonus tracks. One of the bonus tracks is "Crystal Japan", which Trent Reznor of NIN admitted to ripping off inadvertently for NIN's "A Warm Place".
According to the MRIB in 1998, Scary Monsters is Bowie's sixth best-selling album of all time in the UK.
