David Bowie FAQ:Music:Albums:
Tonight (1984)
In 1984 Bowie released Tonight. The album includes a duet with Tina Turner (Tonight).
The first version of Tonight (on Iggy's album, Lust For Life) included the lines: 'I saw my baby, she was turning blue I knew that soon, her young life was through And so I got down on my knees, down by her bed And these are the words, to her I said'. Bowie's duet with Tina Turner omitted these lines.
This album effectively saw Bowie playing for time. With only four new songs written (two of them cowritten with Iggy Pop), he filled the album out with Iggy Pop covers (Tonight, Don't Look Down, Neighbourhood Threat), a Leiber/Stoller cover (I Keep Forgetting) and a Beach Boys cover (God Only Knows).
Despite receiving only lukewarm reviews, the album did well in the charts initially, mainly as a result of the success of Let's Dance which meant that Bowie now had his largest global fanbase ever. The lead-off single (Blue Jean, accompanied by a 22-minute film short promo video) made #8 in both the UK and the US, but the follow-up (Tonight) flopped (it made #53 in both places). A belated third single (Loving The Alien) made #19 in the UK.
The album topped the UK charts, and spent 19 weeks on the chart. In the US, the album got to #11 and spent 24 weeks on the chart.
The album was rereleased on CD by Virgin in 1995 with three bonus tracks (This Is Not America, As The World Falls Down and When The Wind Blows). In 1998, EMI re-released the album as a mid-price CD in the UK without the bonus tracks.
