David Bowie FAQ:Music:Albums:
Never Let Me Down (1987)
This album is generally regarded as Bowie's worst album ever. It is a frequent entrant on "Worst Albums Ever" lists.
One of the songs (Makin' My Love) featured a rap by actor Mickey Rourke, and Bowie's old schoolmate, Peter Frampton (whose father was Bowie's art teacher), played guitar on the album.
Released to arguably the worst reviews ever to greet a Bowie album, the album brought about a major decline in Bowie's commercial fortunes. In the UK, the album became the first major Bowie album in over 7 years not to top the charts, making only #6 and spending just 16 weeks on the chart. In the US, the album only made #34 (Bowie's worst peak position since Heroes), and spent 26 weeks on the chart.
In 1995, Virgin rereleased the album on CD with three bonus tracks (Girls, originally written for Tina Turner, Julie, and When The Wind Blows), but bizarrely omitted one track from the original album (Too Dizzy).
Although Bowie has stated in interviews that it is his one of his best-selling albums, this is unlikely to be true. In 1998, the MRIB confirmed that it was not one of his 10 biggest sellers ever in the UK.
