This section of Compilations covers the albums RarestOneBowie (1995) to Rarest Live (1999). The division between LPs and CDs is rather arbitrarily chosen, as in the late 80s and early 90s most compilations were released both on vinyl and CD; titles marked with an * have also been released as LP. Soundtracks and most of the albums containing Decca/Deram material are treated under Soundtracks and Early Works respectively, while several semi-legal compilations are discussed under Pirates.

BBC Sessions 1969-1972 [Sampler] (NMC NMCD 0072), July 1996 (UK) Hang On To Yourself 1/Ziggy Stardust 2/Space Oddity 3/Andy Warhol 4/Waiting For The Man 5/Interview-Let Me Sleep Beside You 6. 1 Sound Of The Seventies: Bob Harris (18-01-72), 2 Sound Of The Seventies: John Peel (16-05-72), 3 Johnnie Walker Lunchtime Show (22-05-72), 4 Sound Of The Seventies: Bob Harris (21-09-71), 5 Sound Of The Seventies: Andy Ferris (25-03-70) and 6 Dave Lee Travis Show (20-10-69). This CD was released for one week and then withdrawn in the UK in 1995, but eventually appeared in most stores in mid-1996. The complete 3CD set, for which this album was supposed to be a teaser, has never materialized. Only in 2000, a different 2CD set, Bowie At The Beeb, saw the light of day. Note that this sampler has two tracks ('Andy Warhol' and 'Waiting For The Man') that are not included on Bowie At The Beeb. Additional information can be found under Bowie At The Beeb and BBC Sessions. |

The Deram Anthology 1966-1968 (Deram 844 784-2), June 1997 (UK) Rubber Band (7" version)/The London Boys/The Laughing Gnome/The Gospel According To Tony Day/Uncle Arthur/Sell Me A Coat/Rubber Band/Love You Till Tuesday/There Is A Happy Land/We Are Hungry Men/When I Live My Dream/Little Bombardier/Silly Boy Blue/Come And Buy My Toys/Join The Gang/She's Got Medals/Maid Of Bond Street/Please Mr. Gravedigger/Love You Till Tuesday (7" version)/Did You Ever Have A Dream/Karma Man/Let Me Sleep Beside You/In The Heat Of The Morning/Ching-A-Ling/Sell Me A Coat/When I Live My Dream/Space Oddity. Nothing new, but this is the first CD with all Bowie's pre-Space Oddity songs in a chronological running order. The last four tracks are taken from Love You Till Tuesday, so 'Ching-A-Ling' and 'Space Oddity' unfortunately are edited, 'Sell Me A Coat' has extra backing vocals, and 'When I Live My Dream' is the second version that was intended for single release. |

The Best Of David Bowie 1969/1974 (EMI 7243 8 21849 2 8), October 1997 (EC) The Jean Genie/Space Oddity/Starman/Ziggy Stardust/John I'm Only Dancing/Rebel Rebel/Let's Spend The Night Together/Suffragette City/Oh! You Pretty Things/Velvet Goldmine/Drive-In Saturday/Diamond Dogs/Changes/Sorrow/The Prettiest Star/Life On Mars/Aladdin Sane/The Man Who Sold The World/Rock 'N' Roll Suicide/All The Young Dudes. Includes the sax version of 'John I'm Only Dancing', a previously unavailable stereo version the 1970 'The Prettiest Star' single and the studio version of 'All The Young Dudes'. The US edition (EMI/Capitol 72438-21320-2-8) (bottom) was released in a digipack with a different cover and highly incorrect liner notes. The word goes that for this particular reason it was withdrawn rather quickly. The Japanese edition (EMI M033647), with a cover identical to the UK issue, drops 'Suffragette City' but adds 'Lady Stardust' as a bonus track. |

Rarest Series (Rarest Records SCET1100011), 1998 (UK). Same as RarestOneBowie, plus The Jean Genie/John I'm Only Dancing/Suffragette City from Santa Monica '72 as a bonus. |
| Beat 600 - 60's & 70's Golden Nuggest Tracks (Espresso 565365-2), March 1999 (Italy) Ragazzo Solo, Ragazzo Sola. Actually this section is limited to Bowie-only albums, but this particular Italian compilation of 60s and 70s music is the only official CD that has the Italian version of 'Space Oddity'. Unfortunately the track has been taken from an LP instead of the master tape... |
