October 31: A Hollywood video store clerk is the talk of the film town after selling his script for Diamond Dogs just twenty four hours after it was put on the market. Jay Friedman, who works at Rocket Video in Hollywood, says his script is inspired by the David Bowie song of the same name and is an action-adventure thriller set in the world of diamond thieves. Bel Air Entertainment, who usually works in conjunction with distributor Warner Brothers, reportedly paid a mid six-figure sum for the script with the scale sliding up to the high six-figure range as options are exercised and the project gets produced. (Ed: wonder what they'll use on the soundtrack?)

October 21: In a surprise appearance never mentioned in show promotions, David Bowie turned up at the very end of last night's VH1 Fashion Show Awards to present the Designer Of The Year award to Stella McCartney, daughter of Paul McCartney. Dressed in a snappy dark suit with knee length jacket, Bowie entered to the strains of Fame and huge applause from the crowd. He gave a few snappy dance steps on his way to the podium and greeting the supermodel-laced audience with "Hello beautiful people... and living skeletons" (Ed: which may have been lost on some :-)).
After Stella McCartney made her way up to accept the award, Bowie pretended not to have the trophy, saying instead there'd been a bit of a "cock-up" but he'd scrambled around to find a couple of tickets for next year's Zoolander movie (Ed: in which Bowie makes a cameo appearance). Then, to McCartney's surprise, her father Paul McCartney appeared from stage right carrying the trophy, putting two of the most famous rock stars on stage together.
The awards show, like most VH1 specials, will be regularly repeated over the coming weeks, so if you're looking for Bowie, he appears right at the very end of the two hour show. Look on the upcoming appearances section for repeats of the show.

October 13: At the request of Pete Townshend, Bowie this week starting recording a cover of The Who's Pictures Of Lily for an upcoming album of Who covers scheduled for release in 2001. According to his BowieNet journal, David took a couple of unusual twists in his approach to the Townshend penned composition. First he slowed the tempo to half speed. Second he resurrected the stylophone last used on Space Oddity. Should be an interesting interpretation when it gets released next year!

October 12: Congratulations are in order for Bandit, the winner of a signed copy of The Complete David Bowie in last week's book contest. If you didn't win, you should now be able to find the book in most UK bookstores, or you can order it online from elsewhere in the world.
October 12: David Bowie has asked jazz singer and pianist Annette Peacock to work with him on the Tony Visconti produced album scheduled to start recording in January of next year. That's according to remarks Peacock made at the release party for An Acrobat's Heart, her first official album in almost two decades. While her official web page simply states that she "is at present working with David Bowie on his new album", an attendee of Tuesday's album release party reports that Peacock confirmed that Bowie has asked her to record with him in January and even suggested that she accompany him on tour.
This won't be the first business interaction between Bowie and Peacock. While she may not be a household name today, she was a hot property in the early seventies and as this interview from 1978 confirms, she was signed to the Mainman label (Ed: although no album was ever released) after Bowie "kept talking about [her] for a whole year". Her songs Seven Days and I'm The One also appeared on Mick Ronson's Play Don't Worry and Slaughter on 10th Avenue.
You can read more about Annette Peacock at her label ECM's biography page, and read the article mentioned above at this fan site.

October 5: After months of attempting to get their mega-music-merger approved by EU authorities, EMI and Time Warner announced today that they were calling off their attempt to create the world's largest music group. EU regulators had balked at the creation of a group which would have combined EMI's stable of stars such as Bowie, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles with that of Warner Music mega-sellers Madonna, Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. One of the proposals apparently suggested in the discussions was the divestment of Virgin Records, Bowie's personal record label, with some reports suggesting that the original founder of Virgin Records, Richard Branson, was interested in repurchasing the company. For now it appears the two companies are back to the drawing board to reconsider their options.
