Nat Tate
by William Boyd.
Published by 21, March, 1998
Output by Bowie's art publishing company 21, this book was initially promoted as heralding the lost work of New York artist Nat Tate, claimed to have burned almost all his art a few days before leaping to his death off the Staten Island ferry.
Later, it was revealed that Nat Tate was part of an elaborate prank played on the art world by Bowie and the other associates at 21 (and Modern Painters). In fact, Nat Tate never existed - he is entirely fictional. Boyd used some modified versions of his own works together with a well fabricated story to produce this supposed biography :)
Foreword by Gore Vidal and additional comments by David Bowie.
